Can a person on the autistic spectrum have relationships?
Michael
It?s entirely possible for autistic people to have relationships, romantic or otherwise. The problem is not emotional, as with some disorders, it?s that they have trouble making the connections socially. If you have significant social problems, then that?s going to make it hard to find friendship or a romantic relationship, but it?s not impossible, and many autistic people are happily married.

Of course you can, you only just found out right? Don?t let it get to you. I have bi polar, and I?m cool with it. It makes me feel different but I?m not hurting any one and I can have a good relation ship with a man and good friendships.
It?s mind over meter, pretend the doctor said you were fine and get on with your life. Take the medication if it was given to you, but just think of them as vitamins. Have you had a relation ship before? If yes, then don?t think twice about your future with friends and girlfriends. Someone out there will see you as perfect, and every one has issues, some stronger then others.

There is no reason you can?t have a meaningful relationship. You may have to adjust your social skills a bit but that?s doable. You will have to date a variety of girls to find the one who will be right for you but that?s true for all of us. The short temper may be your biggest handicap here. You will need to control it as that can destroy a relationship quickly.
So, try to date and see what happens. Good luck,

Many people are on the autistic spectrum and don?t even realise it ? they live normal lives. Don?t let a label lower your expectations for life. Nobody is the perfect friend or partner ? we all have to work at our relationships. The fact that you have taken the trouble to write such a well thought-out question poves that you can communicate with people and so you have the most essential relationship skill. Many people are still single in their mid-30?s ? don?t rule anything out yet ? well, don?t ever rule it out.

I?m 21 with Aspergers and I?ve held down a good serious relationship. Autism isn?t a dead end, just an obstacle. We?re delayed at social/communication skills as we grow up, but we can catch on by working with the right resources.
