Michigan F.A.S.H. Fest: Recycling Everyday Objects ? CBS Detroit

She?s worked with everyone from The Romantics to the wife of David Bowie ? and now one Detroiter is ready to show off her mad design skills?for a great cause.

With some power tools, some guitar wire and a touch of brilliance, Meridith Lorde is racing against the clock to take fashion to that next level for the first-ever Michigan F.A.S.H. Fest, which happens 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Shain Park in Birmingham.

Lorde will be there with found and recycled objects to create fashion, much of it with a rocker edge.

Think necklaces made of guitar picks, and melted vinyl records turned into skirts.

?I kind of think maybe I was the Lady Gaga before Lady Gaga was ? I was like let?s glue some tea cups together and we?ll do a little Alice in Wonderland party,? Lorde said.

The model, makeup artist, entertainer and now fashion designer has worked with top artists and when approached to create 10 looks for fashion fest, she was ready to bring all of her creative energies together.

The project had a catch though ? Lorde has to piece?together the 10 designs from recycled items.

Over the past 6 weeks, artists and music industry elite started sending the U of M Dearborn grad all sorts of interesting items. And after hundreds of hours of labor, she says she hopes her message of love for the city of Detroit comes through in her designs.

Five Fundamentals for Direct Mail | Business 2 Community

Direct mail marketing is becoming increasingly tricky because of post office woes and the amount of ?junk mail? (perception is everything) that people are already receiving. Like those random e-newsletters people receive, many direct mail pieces are simply glanced at and then thrown away. Because of that, many marketers now shy away from direct mail, believing that it is not the smartest way to market a product, company or service in the 21st century. In fact, direct mail can still be a powerful tool in your marketing toolbox, but like with everything else we?ve talked about so far in this series, you need to approach your direct mail campaign with objectives, careful thought into how you will get your message across, and a few fundamentals. Here are some tips we?ve come up with for you.

1. Make sure you are sending to a targeted audience

Unlike print advertising, a more targeted approach of advertising is direct mail. There are a lot of ways to narrow down to whom you are going to send your direct mail. Many publications offer list rentals, and the circulation of that publication can be broken down in all kinds of ways ranging from geographical location to job title. There are list houses from whom you can buy a list, which is advantageous because that means you can mail to the list more than once (a rented list usually does not allow for that option). You can also send a direct mail piece to your existing database of customers and/or prospects. Because postage and printing can be expensive, strategizing how you will use your direct mail piece over an entire year can be advantageous. That way you can target different groups of people and print the full quantity you will need at one time.

2. Offer an incentive to the recipient for not trashing the piece

One of the most successful direct mail efforts we?ve conducted involved a survey sent with a dollar bill. While we got a couple of quips back about how a dollar couldn?t buy anything, the overall response rate was extremely high (over 40%, which is well above average for a direct mail effort). Another successful effort was to incentivize a response to a survey card by noting all recipients would be entered into a drawing. There are countless ways to inspire people to look a little further. The right kind of message, an out-of-the-box approach, a simple incentive like a dollar bill, or a more complex give-away that will grab attention all are great ways to make sure your direct mail piece has some staying power.

3. Make it interactive

Direct mail, like your e-newsletter or your ad, no longer needs to be a one-way path for communication. Invite recipients to engage with you. There are, again, numerous ways to do this, and a truly integrated campaign can afford you the opportunity to use different channels to support each other. For example, your direct mail piece could entice people to join your Facebook page. If they join and use a code included in the direct mail piece, they get entered into a drawing at the next trade show. That?s a complex example, but on a more basic scale, using QR codes to link to videos or to a live introduction from someone at your company can enrich what used to be a very two-dimensional marketing tactic. An interactive direct mail piece means a memorable direct mail piece, and memorable is a key to direct mail success.

4. Be aware of postal guidelines

Of course, if your piece doesn?t meet postal regulations, it doesn?t matter how fantastic it is. Understanding where postage indicias should go, where the margins are for content on a mailer, and many other details are often overlooked but entirely essential. If you have questions, bring a mock-up of your piece to your post office and make sure everything meets postal requirements. Better to take some time before sending rather than sending thousands of pieces only to realize they will never find their destination.

5. Make sure you measure

Yep, it?s no surprise ? measurement rears its head once again. In the case of direct mail, the easiest way to begin to measure the success of your campaign is to incorporate a response mechanism into the concept. If people respond then you at least know that your piece was seen and that the recipient took enough time to actually engage with your message. A respondent doesn?t necessarily qualify as a lead, however, especially if the person is responding to a survey. Lead respondents further into your sales funnel. Invite them to join your page where potential leads can be nurtured. Invite respondents to a special landing page that includes an RFQ form or a sample request form. See if the respondents are willing to take that next step and nurture them from there.

Postage and printing costs, along with any incentives, can make a direct mail campaign seem intimidating. However, if you approach the process with a lot of thought, clear objectives, and several ways to both nurture leads and measure the effectiveness of the campaign, your company can realize many benefits.

NBA Live 13 gets delay, first in-game trailer

Good news, ball-bouncing fans! EA has released the first in-game trailer for NBA Live 13! Oh, and revealed that the long-overdue revival of the series will take a little longer, as it's delayed. That's a bit of bad news, I suppose. Sorry I didn't prepare you adequately.

"Many fans have been anticipating an early October launch, but our plan is to release at a later date," EA said in a blog post. "We will share more information in the future." That's all. Hopefully the holdup will be sorted out by the time the NBA season begins on October 30.

Coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, NBA Live is built upon the new Playmaker engine, which has all sorts of fancy animation tech for a smooth basket-balling experience. It will also be EA Sports' first entry to the franchise since 2009.

Brent steady above $115 ahead of German ruling

TOKYO (Reuters) - Brent crude was steady on Wednesday after four days of gains, staying above $115 a barrel as investors remained cautiously optimistic a German court would approve the legality of the euro zone's bailout fund.

The ruling by Germany's Constitutional Court at 0800 GMT, as well as recent weak U.S. economic data that raised expectations for a third round of bond buying by the Federal Reserve, have dragged on the dollar and supported oil prices.

London Brent crude for October delivery, which expires on Thursday, was trading 2 cents higher at $115.42 a barrel by 0326 GMT, after settling up 59 cents on Tuesday. U.S. crude for October delivery was down 14 cents at $97.03 a barrel.

"There are no movements ahead of the Germany ruling," said Masaki Suematsu, energy team sales manager at Newedge Japan. "If (the bailout fund) was ruled illegal, it would be a surprise, sending shares and the euro down sharply."

The greenback came under further pressure after Moody's Investors Service on Tuesday warned the United States' credit rating could be downgraded if 2012 budget negotiations do not produce debt-reducing policies.

A surprise increase in U.S. crude stockpiles weighed on prices, however. U.S. crude stocks rose 221,000 barrels last week, the American Petroleum Institute said on Tuesday, against expectations that inventories would be 2.6 million barrels lower.

Gasoline stocks fell 4.2 million barrels and distillate stocks rose 2.5 million barrels, the API said. Gasoline stocks were expected to be 1.6 million barrels lower and distillate supplies were expected to be near flat, up only 200,000 barrels.

The API data will be followed by more closely watched numbers from the U.S. Energy Department at 10:30 a.m. EDT (1430 GMT).

OIL RESERVES

OPEC production rose about 260,000 barrels per day (bpd) in August, the producer group said on Tuesday, as dwindling Iranian exports in the face of European and U.S. sanctions over its disputed nuclear programme were offset by other nations in the 12-member group.

The U.S. government's Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Tuesday raised its forecast for global oil demand growth and lowered non-OPEC oil production for 2013, but added that non-OPEC output is expected to increase enough to meet demand.

OPEC and EIA both emphasized the possibility that a worsening European crisis could still drag down oil prices, warnings that may complicate deliberations over whether to tap into strategic oil reserves again.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) normally coordinates strategic stock releases by member states, though some analysts think the U.S. could act unilaterally or in concert with individual members if widespread agreement on a move cannot be reached.

Investors were also looking out for the IEA's monthly report on global oil markets later in the day.

PST: US back on track in World Cup qualifying

Was it all a bunch of wasted worry? Was all the teeth gnashing, nervous tummy tumbling and nail biting all so unnecessary after all?

The United States? World Cup qualifying effort, looking unsteady and unbalanced for a few days, is back on solid ground following a 1-0 win over Jamaica in Columbus.

Jurgen Klinsmann?s men were dominant for 65 minutes. In fact, dominant doesn?t tell the story as the United States completed a stunning 91 percent of its first half passes against a Jamaican team that sat in a surprisingly passive and defensive crouch. An otherworldly combo of post- and crossbar-rattlers (three of them in the first 45) and spectacular stuff from Reggae Boyz goaltender Dwayne Miller kept the United States out of goal before the break.

(MORE: Highlights from last night?s match)

Finally, Herculez Gomez scored unquestionably his biggest goal in a U.S. shirt ? and probably the biggest U.S. goal since Landon Donovan?s late strike against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup. That was the breakthrough ? and the United States is now tied atop the group once again, along with Guatemala and Jamaica.

(MORE: U.S. Man of the Match, Herculez Gomez)

The job isn?t done, but Klinsmann?s kids do have two winnable matches remaining, at Antigua and Barbuda and then back at home against Guatemala. Both games are in October.

More on those later. For now, here are 10 talking points on Tuesday?s massive win.

1.????If U.S. fans feel a bit conflicted about this one, it?s about those final 20 minutes, when the United States lost initiative, backing off following the breakthrough goal. Some was down to Jamaica pressing higher, but the response just wasn?t as convincing as it needed to be.

2. ???Clearly not satisfied with his things from last Friday, Klinsmann made five changes in the lineup, introducing Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo, Danny Williams, Graham Zusi and Jose Torres.

3. ???Check marks on the U.S. side for Geoff Cameron, Cherundolo, Fabian Johnson, Williams, Zusi and Herculez Gomez. All had convincing nights. Cameron?s work was particularly unimpeachable, and Cherundolo was near-perfect against Luton Shelton, a man much faster that the U.S. right back.

4. ???Torres, a polarizing figure among U.S. fans, did nothing like the night he needed. The U.S. left-sided midfielder wasn?t bad ? but it simply wasn?t enough in a night of U.S. dominance. And isn?t this (?not enough?) always the story with Torres? Klinsmann even said as much last week. For all the U.S. possession, Torres just never manufactured the big moment in the final third. Zusi, playing Torres? equal on the opposite side in the U.S. 4-4-2, managed to make things happen in ways Torres never did. Plus, the ball often slows down when it reaches Torres (and Jermaine Jones, too, for that matter.) Torres was removed after 65 minutes. If he was running out of chances before, where does leave him now?

5. ???Jones? What does Klinsmann see in him? Please submit answers to ProSoccerTalk HQ.

6. ???Even before Gomez?s crucial goal, his free kicks were impressive, creating threatening U.S. chances. His first-half ball into Jones (Jones!) was deadeye perfect; The U.S. midfielder whiffed on the header from top of the six-yard box when he had perfect inside position on his man. (Seriously, Jones is still more liability than asset. The only way the United States was ever going to lose was for Jones to do something stupid and red-card worthy. I said on Twitter in the first half that exact thing ? and put the chances at 27 percent.)

7. ???The Cherundolo-Zusi combo was flat out devastating in the first 45. They looked like they had been playing together since YMCA soccer in grade school. Zusi had the first U.S. chance, banging one off the cross bar in the 6th minute. Meanwhile, Cherundolo was adding so much more push up the right side that just wasn?t there on Friday.

8. ???Williams was the primary holding man in a 4-4-2 and had his best night in the U.S. shirt by a long way. That shouldn?t be so surprising since that?s his position in Germany; Klinsmann, with a wealth of central midfielders has usually played Williams out wide. I think we just saw that change. If so, one of the usual central midfielders is odd man out, either Jones, Maurice Edu or Kyle Beckerman.

9. ???Not so sharp? Clint Dempsey did what he could, but his touch and timing are clearly not Dempsey-esque. You really have to wonder about the choice to play him all 90 minutes Tuesday, especially after he went all 90 tough minutes on Friday. That man was wiped out by the 60th minute in Columbus by the look of it.

9a. ???Bocanegra was similarly stale. Not bad, just not World Cup qualifier sharp, with a bad choice here and there while bringing the ball out of the back. And he got dragged out of position once, stranding Cameron behind him as Jamaica buzzed in dangerously.

10. ???In the last 20 minutes the United States looked nervous as schoolboys at the junior high dance. Credit for the three points, which was always the bottom line. Still, you?d like to see the American manage things better late, more convincingly nursing home the 1-goal margins. Maybe that?s a nitpick, but it?s not much of one.

Jolie hears 'horrific' accounts of Syrian refugees

ZAATARI, Jordan (AP) ? Her eyes welling up with tears, actress Angelina Jolie said Tuesday she heard "horrific" and "heartbreaking" accounts from Syrian refugees who fled the civil war in their country to find shelter in a camp just across the border in Jordan.

The Hollywood star and U.N. refugee agency's special envoy spoke as she visited the Zaatari camp, which hosts about 30,000 Syrians displaced by the 18-month conflict that has so far claimed at least 23,000 lives, according to activists.

"I am very concerned, the world is very concerned," Jolie said during her high-profile visit aimed at focusing international attention on the plight of Syrian refugees and attracting more funding to help them. "What is very heartbreaking is when Syrian people ask you why you think no one is able to find a solution for them."

"What they described on the ground, hearing it from them is so horrific," she said, adding that the children's stories were especially moving. "When you meet so many innocent people and civilians, the people of Syria are asking who is on their side. 'Who is going to help us as the months go on?'"

The actress also said some of the refugees expressed fears "there will be no more of us" left in Syria as the relentless bloodshed grinds on.

Jolie also met separately with Syrian refugee women and toured the sprawling tent city in the company of U.N. refugee chief Antonio Guterres and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

"This mission that we are sharing has a key objective. It is to draw attention to the international community to express a much more stronger solidarity with Syrian refugees and the host countries that have kept their borders open to all those fleeing the conflict," said Guterres.

According to Guterres, Jordan has taken in some 200,000 Syrians ? the largest number in the region. The refugee chief acknowledged the sheer numbers are taking a toll on Jordan's economy and resources, stressing that the "camp needs massive international funding" and that its conditions were "still not acceptable."

The UNHCR in April promoted Jolie from serving as its goodwill ambassador to special envoy due to her exceptional work for the agency.

Jordan opened up the Zaatari facility for Syrians in July after long delaying a decision on whether to set up refugee camps, possibly to avoid angering Syrian President Bashar Assad's autocratic regime by showing images at his doorstep of civilians fleeing his military onslaught.

Jolie was also to visit Syrian refuges in Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq during the rest of her trip to the region.

In Geneva, the UNHCR said Tuesday that while the agency has 253,106 people registered or awaiting registration as Syrian refugees, the real number is likely far higher since tens of thousands are believed to have not yet registered. Some are getting help from family or friends, while some are afraid to register for fear of possible consequences from Assad's regime.

Agency spokesman Adrian Edwards said the refugees have reported continuing artillery and air attacks in villages and towns close to the Jordanian border, and that there are thousands of displaced in southern Syria.

The UNHCR also has been scaling up emergency operations for 200,000 people inside Syria who have been displaced by fighting and need medical care, shelter and schools.

Bachelor Pad Season Finale Shocker: Who Won the Money? Who Broke Up? Who Got Engaged?

Another partially exciting season of Bachelor Pad is in the books, and the finale of ABC's guilty pleasure smash certainly packed in something for everyone.

Who won it all? Who broke up? Who got engaged?

Let's break it all down in THG's final BP recap ...

Chris Bukowski Bachelor Pad PhotoBlakeley Shea Jones Bikini Photo

Kalon McMahon and Lindzi Cox are still together! Plus 20.

Erica Rose, in a desperate attempt to stay relevant, tells Lindzi to be careful because she's spotted Kalon at different events with other women. Minus 10.

Lindzi didn't know what to say or do. So, yeah. Minus 5.

Jaclyn said she was still hurt by being betrayed by her "best friend" Rachel on the last episode, when the latter did not take Jackie and Ed to the finale.

Rachel said Nick pushed to oust them because they would have been a bigger threat, which makes total sense. Jaclyn? Not altogether stable. Minus 50.

Blakeley Shea, or Blakeley Jones, or Blakeley Shea Jones ... whatever she wants to be called, she may not have won the money, but she won in love.

Seriously. She and Tony Pieper are still together! And then some! T-Piep surprised everyone, including his lady, with a proposal on stage! Plus 150.

She said yes, you guys. Obvi. Plus 10.

Then the final four took the stage and there was clearly major tension between Rachel and Michael, who clearly aren't about to pull a Tony-Blakeley.

Mike said he's not looking for a serious long-distance relationship ... but Rachel revealed that she found out Michael in exactly that with someone else.

Plus 50 for Mike being in the hot seat two years in a row on the finale, but this time at least the love of his life isn't getting engaged to another guy.

Chris Bukowski seemed a bit remorseful, having played everyone openly from the start. Not even his family was proud of him, he said. Minus 160.

Therein lies the problem with screwing people over all season. He won enough competitions to make it this far, but votes were in short supply for C.

Rachel and Nick got almost a clean sweep. Plus 40.

Now for the interesting part - or what has the potential to be. In separate rooms, Nick and Rache had to decide to "share" or "keep" the money.

If both choose to split it down the middle, that's exactly what happens with the prize. If one chooses to keep the $250,000, their partner is out of luck.

If both choose to keep it, the money gets dispersed among the rest of the Bachelor Pad housemates and Rachel and Nick walk away with nothing.

It's a big dice roll any way you slice it, but Rachel Trueheart said she wouldn't have gotten this far without her partner and chose to share the cash.

After saying how he got here on his own, Nick decided to KEEP IT FOR HIMSELF. Nick Peterson is your SOLE Bachelor Pad winner, ladies and gentlemen!

Nick Peterson Photo

Plus 275 for the major brass that took. We'd feel bad for Rache, but no one even acted like Nick was even on the show, and hey, it is a game after all.

You know Chris is giving him props right now. Plus 25.

Rachel was "devastated" and called her partner a "f--king schmuck." Nick clearly did not care, saying she didn't even want to be partners with him.

Sorry Ms. Trueheart. It's the name of the lame game.

EPISODE TOTAL: +335! SEASON TOTAL: -420!

What do you think of Nick Peterson's fast one?

(AP) ? The massive teacher strike in Chicago offers a high-profile test for the nation's teacher unions, which have seen their political influence threatened as a growing reform movement seeks to expand charter schools, get private companies involved with failing schools and link teacher evaluations to student test scores.

The unions are taking a major stand on teacher evaluations, one of the key issues in the Chicago dispute. If they lose there, it could have ripple effects around the country.

Both the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers are "a bit weaker," said Rick Hess of the American Enterprise Institute, a nonpartisan think tank. "They are playing on more hostile terrain and they are facing opponents the likes of which they have not had to face before."

Members of the Chicago Teachers Union ? the AFT's oldest local ? walked off the job Monday for the first time in 25 years over issues that include pay raises, classroom conditions, job security and teacher evaluations.

They are pitted against Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a powerful Democrat ? and former chief of staff to President Barack Obama ? who wants to extract more concessions from teachers while the school district faces a nearly $700 million deficit.

Major teacher strikes have been rare in recent years, compared with the 1960s and 1970s, when teachers went on strike frequently for better pay and improved bargaining rights. While unions generally got what they wanted in the past, they face a tougher climate today.

With the weak economy, unions have seen massive teacher layoffs, increased class sizes and school districts unable or unwilling to boost teacher salaries. Like other public employee unions, they are also under attack from Republican governors like Scott Walker of Wisconsin, who signed a measure last year to curb collective bargaining rights and limit benefits for state workers.

The 2.2-million member NEA has lost more than 100,000 members since 2010, as fewer public school teachers are hired and more charter schools open, most of which are not unionized. At the 1.5 million-member AFT, years of steady growth have leveled off.

"They certainly are on the defensive," said Richard Ingersoll, a professor of education and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. "They are under attack. A lot of times they are demonized. On the other hand there's really smart and progressive elements in the teacher's movement who want to get out ahead of this and do it in a way that's fair."

In the past, teachers unions could count on a Democratic White House to fight back on their behalf. But Obama's education secretary, Arne Duncan, is a former head of Chicago Public Schools who has pushed for many of the changes that unions oppose.

"In many ways the Obama administration has signed onto the very conservative set of reforms that the education community is imposing on teachers," said Richard Kahlenberg of the Century Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington.

Both the NEA and the AFT have strongly endorsed Obama's re-election despite his administration's support of policies to expand charter schools, weaken tenure and base teacher evaluations on how much student performance improves.

Evaluating teachers on how much their students improve is a key component of Obama's education policy. His administration has approved waivers freeing many states from the most onerous requirements of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law. In order to get a waiver, each state had to promise to show in other ways that its students and schools are improving, and to more closely link teacher evaluations to student test scores.

The Chicago union argues that the new teacher evaluation system relies too heavily on standardized test scores without considering outside factors such as student poverty, violence and homelessness that can affect performance.

Hess said the Chicago strike has become an important test case after unions lost their effort to recall Wisconsin's governor.

"If it looks like the union folds, especially on the heels of Wisconsin, it's a huge blow for the unions," Hess said. "If the union seems to win, that's going to be a blow to reform-minded mayors and puts some wind into the sails of unions."

There are major differences, though, between the cases in Wisconsin and Chicago.

While Walker effectively challenged public employee unions' collective bargaining rights, both sides in Chicago have been negotiating over traditional labor-management issues. The district proposed a 16 percent raise over four years and the two sides have essentially agreed on a longer school day. But job security and a new teacher evaluation system remained in dispute.

"This is a long-term battle that everyone's going to watch," said Eric Hanuskek, a senior fellow in education at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. "Other teachers unions in the United States are wondering if they should follow suit."

Teacher unions also are growing nervous about how they are portrayed in an upcoming Hollywood movie called "Won't Back Down," set to open in theaters on Sept. 28. The film tells the story of a mother's quest to take control of her daughter's failing elementary school.

AFT President Randi Weingarten has blasted the movie as "using the most blatant stereotypes and caricatures I have ever seen" and unfairly blaming unions for the nation's school woes. Union leaders were even more outraged that the movie was screened at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., and that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa ? the convention chairman ? attended the screening.

Villaraigosa is a former union organizer who has spoken out in favor of greater accountability for schools and teachers.

Jilted Rock Sparrows Sing Loudest

60-Second Science

A rock sparrow's song broadcasts his luck with the ladies--whether good or bad. Daisy Yuhas reports.

More 60-Second Science

A male songbird?s tune advertises his status and availability to choosy females. But rock sparrows offer a notable exception: their crooning can also reveal when the male has been jilted.?

Researchers studied the songs of male rock sparrows in the French Alps. These sparrows have a simple song?one element, repeated several times, as you can hear in this young male.

When the researchers compared a male's song to his success in siring chicks, they found subtle surprises. Older sparrows?who have slower-paced, higher pitched songs than younger birds?sire the most chicks. This suggests females use other cues, such as physical appearance, in selecting the best mate.

In an added twist, males whose mates have paired off with another bird sing louder than males with faithful females. This is the first known case of an inverse link between bird song volume and a male?s nesting success. The study is in the journal PLoS ONE. [Erwin Nemeth et al, Rock Sparrow Song Reflects Male Age and Reproductive Success]

The male isn?t just singing his sorrows, however. The researchers propose that the male raises his voice in a desperate attempt to call back his partner?the rock sparrow version of the late-night drink-and-dial.

ageless scented: News and Society -Crime News Blog ? gifynoluf ...

Early this year, a suicide bomber that exploded on his way to his target in Damaturu, Yobe State of Nigeria was reported to be shouting that he was doing the ?work of God? and that he would not stop. But that was just before he died after the impact of the explosion threw him into a ditch. I remember that televised little girl that was laden with explosives and smuggled into Israel sometime ago, but before the bomb could go off, she started pleading that people should help her dismantle the bombs because she didn?t want to die. It was indeed very emotional watching her live on television. Definitely, she was sent on that mission against her will. Yes, so many like her who are fortunate to find any way of escape do so, but may never return to their people, otherwise they would be killed for abandoning the ?work of God?. Work of God indeed!

Just last week, two suicide bombers operating on a motorcycle were shattered as their bombs on their way to carried out attacks on the ever busy Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna. Thank God that the planned attack was divinely stopped, otherwise, hundreds of families would have been thrown into mourning that Tuesday afternoon. There have been scores of such suicide bomb attacks in the northern part of country in recent times and thousands have been killed. Now, the questions are: What motivates a person to detonate explosives to kill him/herself and others? How do the terror groups get finances and their couriers? Who trains them? What religious and psychological manipulations do they receive before their missions? Are there also diabolical aspects of the mission? Why do they always have charms, amulets and Spiritists with them?

And strangely at the above-mentioned Kaduna incident, after the explosion killed the would-be bombers, suddenly a strange swarm of bees appeared at the scene and dispersed the crown that gathered to witness the incident. It was televised. True! Are they truly working for God? The ?God? of sorcerers and murderers? And most importantly, for our discussion here, is their any reward of paradise, many wives or eternal prize awaiting them after death??

Suicide bombings as we are now witnessing in Nigeria and many other parts of the world are basically carried out by Jihadists; those who forcefully want to impose their religious beliefs on others. They dubiously do this under the guise of fight for their religion or brethren which they often claim are under threat. But it has been proved that these efforts are never propelled by religious but by political, social and economic motives. Or how else do you explain the attacks on national, financial, media, humanitarian and even same religion institutions. But we can?t go into all of those here. We?ll just try to comment on the religious and psychological aspects of this satanic enterprise.

The suicide bombers (and all Jihadists) are always thoroughly brainwashed before they embark on these evil missions. They are made to believe that they and their religion are hated. And this brainwashing takes a time of constant, well-planned and coordinated series of indoctrination. This is part of the reason why they are often kept in a camp for a period of time or they have sat under the teachings of other pro-jihadists who masquerade as clerics. There, they would systematically be fed with lies and hate messages about their targets until they believe and make up their minds for the mission; which they are always deceived into believing that they are doing the work and will of God, and that they will be rewarded with paradise, wives, gifts and so many other false, dubious and satanic promises.

But not for the high-level of deception and other diabolical involvement surrounding these missions, one would have expected the would-be bombers to always ask their sponsors how murdering an innocent person would earn an eternal reward when the Almighty, our cultures and even human instincts have warned us against such. Secondly, if truly there are eternal rewards, why do these terror masters always exempt themselves and their relatives from going on such missions? Look at the case of Osama Bin Laden, as he was sponsoring and coordinating these missions all over the world, he carefully gathered his wives and children into a cosy palatial home in Pakistan, which worth millions of dollars. And we learnt he sternly warned his children not to take his path.

Then, in Nigeria, some of the members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect currently terrorising the country have told us how the leadership of the group would always exempt their tribesmen and relations, but would assign and prepare others for suicide missions. They also gave the account of how these leaders would appropriate the widows of the bombers, the stolen exotic cars and money to themselves.

The truth is that there is no paradise or eternal blessing awaiting a suicide bomber or any other murderer for that matter. That promise is definitely from the Devil; the master of deception. But unfortunately, the unrepentant murderers would have found out but too late that they died in vain. Sadly, from the excruciating painful death through the piercing shrapnel of explosives to hell fire; where there will be suffering, weeping and gnashing of teeth forever. Till next week, God bless!

Romney says he would keep parts of Obama healthcare law

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who has called for scrapping President Barack Obama's 2010 U.S. healthcare law, said in remarks aired on Sunday that he likes key parts of "Obamacare" despite his party's loathing of it and wants to retain them.

Romney, who faces Obama in the November 6 election, has vowed throughout the campaign to repeal and replace the Obama healthcare law. But asked about the Obama healthcare law on NBC's "Meet the Press" program, Romney said, "Well, I'm not getting rid of all of healthcare reform."

"Of course, there are a number of things that I like in healthcare reform that I'm going to put in place," Romney added. "One is to make sure that those with pre-existing conditions can get coverage. Two is to assure that the marketplace allows for individuals to have policies that cover their family up to whatever age they might like."

The Obama healthcare law, among other provisions, prevents insurance companies from denying medical coverage to people who already are suffering from a medical condition. It also allows parents to keep their young-adult children on their health insurance plans until age 26.

The law is Obama's signature domestic policy achievement.

Elements of the state healthcare reform plan that Romney put in place as governor of Massachusetts served as a model for the federal law passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by Obama in 2010 despite unified Republican opposition.

"I say we're going to replace Obamacare. And I'm replacing it with my own plan. And even in Massachusetts when I was governor, our plan there deals with pre-existing conditions and with young people," Romney told "Meet the Press."

On the day the Supreme Court upheld the Obama law in June, Romney said the American people must vote the president out of office in order to "get rid of Obamacare." The law is the most sweeping overhaul since the 1960s of the unwieldy U.S. healthcare system.

The Obama law was meant to bring coverage to more than 30 million of the roughly 50 million uninsured and slow soaring medical costs. Republicans say it meddles in the lives of individuals and in the business of the states.

On the divisive social issue of abortion, Romney said it "would be my preference" that the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing it be overturned by any justices who he would appoint to the U.S. Supreme Court if vacancies come up.

"Well, there are a number of things I think that need to be said about preserving and protecting the life of the unborn child. And I recognize there are two lives involved: the mom and the unborn child," Romney said.

"And I believe that people of good conscience have chosen different paths in this regard. But I am pro-life and will intend, if I'm president of the United States, to encourage pro-life policies," he added.

Enough wind to power global energy demand

ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2012) ? There is enough energy available in winds to meet all of the world's demand. Atmospheric turbines that convert steadier and faster high-altitude winds into energy could generate even more power than ground- and ocean-based units. New research from Carnegie's Ken Caldeira examines the limits of the amount of power that could be harvested from winds, as well as the effects high-altitude wind power could have on the climate as a whole.

Their work is published September 9 by Nature Climate Change.

Led by Kate Marvel of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, who began this research at Carnegie, the team used models to quantify the amount of power that could be generated from both surface and atmospheric winds. Surface winds were defined as those that can be accessed by turbines supported by towers on land or rising out of the sea. High-altitude winds were defined as those that can be accessed by technology merging turbines and kites. The study looked only at the geophysical limitations of these techniques, not technical or economic factors.

Turbines create drag, or resistance, which removes momentum from the winds and tends to slow them. As the number of wind turbines increase, the amount of energy that is extracted increases. But at some point, the winds would be slowed so much that adding more turbines will not generate more electricity. This study focused on finding the point at which energy extraction is highest.

Using models, the team was able to determine that more than 400 terrawatts of power could be extracted from surface winds and more than 1,800 terrawatts could be generated by winds extracted throughout the atmosphere.

Today, civilization uses about 18 TW of power. Near-surface winds could provide more than 20 times today's global power demand and wind turbines on kites could potentially capture 100 times the current global power demand.

At maximum levels of power extraction, there would be substantial climate effects to wind harvesting. But the study found that the climate effects of extracting wind energy at the level of current global demand would be small, as long as the turbines were spread out and not clustered in just a few regions. At the level of global energy demand, wind turbines might affect surface temperatures by about 0.1 degree Celsius and affect precipitation by about 1%. Overall, the environmental impacts would not be substantial.

"Looking at the big picture, it is more likely that economic, technological or political factors will determine the growth of wind power around the world, rather than geophysical limitations," Caldeira said.

Useful Tips When Buying A New Home | Real Estate In Key West

Making your first real estate purchase can be intimidating. Indeed, real estate purchases can be intimidating even for more experienced buyers. It can, however, be a very lucrative investment, and when the right decisions are made, it can also improve the quality of your life. The following tips can help anyone with a real estate purchase, regardless of their experience.

In the majority of cases, a home that has been foreclosed on will need repairs. Most foreclosed properties are in need of repair, because they have not been maintained for a very long time. It is common for foreclosed homes to have pests, or require a new HVAC system.

TIP! Ask your Realtor if they can give you a checklist. Many Realtors have checkoff lists available that include all steps of home-buying, including finding the perfect house and mortgage procedures.

If your employment is unstable, take precautions if you are planning to purchase a home. When you sign your mortgage agreement, you are held responsible for the payments, no matter what. If your job situation is precarious, make certain that you have enough money to make payments for a few months, even without your regular salary.

A period of uncertain employment is really not the best time for you to look at purchasing a home. Once your signature is on the dotted line, you?ve agreed to be responsible for the monthly payment, regardless of your circumstances. If things are unsure at the office, then ensure you can make several months of payments even without income.

TIP! If you?re aiming to purchase a home, you must ensure you don?t purchase one simply for the decor. A home should be bought for the shape and manner it?s built.

Make sure that you always have extra money for any unexpected costs when purchasing a property. The closing costs can usually be calculated by adding the real estate taxes, points and down payment together. However, most of the time, extra things are included in closing costs, such as improvement bonds, school taxes, and other specific items related to the area.

Do not let the price of a house you are interested in be influenced by the fact it has a view. While you may put a lot of value in the view, the next buyer you would be selling too might not agree. Therefore, you can buy the house with the view, just make sure you don?t overpay for it.

TIP! Investigate any programs that you may be qualified for that can help you in making a down payment. If you also get your seller to pay closing costs, then you can reduce by a lot what you have to save prior to purchasing.

If you?re thinking about relocating, you may want to consider looking online at the neighborhood of the house you?re thinking of purchasing. You can find a lot of information, even for the smallest cities. You can find out about the population, local schools and salary ranges compared to other locations.

If you have your eye on expensive piece of commercial property, get a reputable partner in on the investment. Meeting the conditions for a commercial loan is much easier when two or more people cosign. When you have someone else willing to share the purchase, he or she can provide part of the down payment. Likewise, his or her credit is also factored in when you are applying for commercial loans.

TIP! You do not want to buy a house with fireplaces in multiple rooms, unless you live in a very cold climate. Most people only use one fireplace, if any at all and having more than one can make them more difficult to maintain.

Make sure to always hire a professional home inspector to look through the home before purchasing it. Even though it will cost you to hire someone to do this, do not try to get a relative or friend to do this for you. If you do not use a professional then you may have little recourse if something is missed during the inspection.

When it comes time to purchase the property, hire a trusted real estate agent. This information can be easily obtained through reviews on the Internet and also from the Better Business Bureau. The best references for an agent are usually from family, friends, and trusted co-workers.

TIP! A professional home inspection is not required, but it is recommended. A professional inspection can tell you important facts about a property you are considering.

Buying real estate will often be the biggest purchase you will ever make, and one of the biggest decisions you will ever have to come to. Using the advice you?ve read here will help you to be confident in the decisions you do make, helping to keep you from making the mistakes your peers might, and ensuring you get the deal you

Consult a qualified real estate professional before investing in a property. Professional real estate brokers and agents have access to tools and resources that you may not have, and know their industry well. For instance, real estate agents have computer programs that make searching through MLS easier. You could do an MLS search on your own; however, using these tools will enhance your search and help you avoid missed opportunities.

TIP! Try to have a good sized down payment saved up before purchasing your home. If you aren?t able to make the minimum down payment, you?ll be facing charges for private mortgage insurance, or PMI.

You know when you see some street freak or maybe it's even your friend acting so beyond weird that you blurt out, "what planet are you from?" Well, Planet Fitness has tapped into that sentiment and in its first commercial for the client, Mullen gives as yet another example of the "what planet are you from" scenario. In the ad, we see a a guy signing up to join Planet Fitness. But, he's just not any guy. He's a bit off. He's a bit full of himself. He's a bit in need of the guys in white coats with a strait jacket. But the cute Planet Fitness employee doesn't freak out. She just sits quietly as this man does, apparently, what he needs to do to make himself feel he's the man he really is.
