Russia's 10 spies chose different paths at home (AP)

MOSCOW ? One is a compulsive socialite who hosts a TV show. Others landed lucrative jobs at state-run companies. Many have simply vanished from sight.

The 10 Russian sleeper agents arrested last year in the United States and deported to Russia in the biggest spy swap since the Cold War have taken vastly different paths since returning home to a hero's welcome.

The FBI's release Monday of a trove of material related to "Ghost Stories," the operation that busted the ring, has brought the spy saga back into the spotlight, but the agents have mostly taken pains to keep their lives low-key.

The exception is Anna Chapman. The 29-year-old posed for the cover of a men's magazine in sexy lingerie and has promoted everything from the occult to venture capitalism. As recently as Sunday, she turned up at a Moscow fashion show.

Nataliya Pereverzeva, known in the U.S. as Patricia Mills, was appointed adviser on foreign affairs to the Russian oil pipeline monopolist, Transneft. Andrei Bezrukov, who used the assumed name Donald Heathfield, landed a job with Russia's top oil company, Rosneft, as a foreign affairs adviser to the chief executive.

Little else about the spies' lives is likely to become known anytime soon. Russia's foreign intelligence agency, the SVR, does not look favorably on former agents talking to the public.

"Any attempt to track them down would be pointless," said Andrei Soldatov, a Russian journalist who co-authored a book on the Russian intelligence services.

The agents, most of them Russian citizens, were hailed as heroes upon their return in July 2010.

President Dmitry Medvedev bestowed the highest state award on them during a Kremlin ceremony. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who served as a KGB agent in East Germany in the 1980s, met with the agents and sang patriotic songs with them.

The SVR almost certainly has provided for its former agents. Soldatov says they have probably been given apartments in a special SVR complex in Moscow and the agency was obliged under Russian law to find them new employment.

Only Chapman has been allowed to socialize, appear on television and exploit her spying fame.

"Unlike the others, Chapman wasn't a trained officer," Soldatov said, drawing on his reading of U.S. court documents. Her knowledge of the activities of Russian intelligence operations in the U.S. appears to have been limited, he said, making her exposure to the public potentially less harmful.

When the 10 Russian sleeper spies were arrested, the risque photos that Chapman had posted on Facebook caused a sensation and told the story of an ambitious young real estate agent out to conquer the city.

But like the other nine, Chapman was nowhere to be seen in the first few months after she was flown to Moscow.

Her first public appearance was during a surprise visit to the Baikonur space center on the steppes of Kazakhstan for the launch of a crew to the International Space Station. She tried to hide from the cameras, but her picture made the cover of Russian tabloids the following day.

Chapman has been more friendly to photographers since then, stripping down to lingerie for a photo shoot for a men's magazine and posing for photographers at the social events she attends.

In the past year, Chapman has been hired to advise the chief executive of a state-controlled bank, hosted a television show on the unexplained mysteries of the occult and taken over as editor of a weekly magazine about venture capital.

Asked the name of the magazine in a recent interview, she replied ? "it's venture-something."

One question Chapman still avoids is her work in the United States, saying she's "not supposed to talk about it."

Her star power may be fading, however. Columnists from social pages ridicule her revealing outfits while bloggers laugh at her gaffes. On a recent visit to St. Petersburg University to give a lecture on leadership on behalf of a pro-Kremlin youth organization, she was booed by students who told her to leave and to take her PR stunts elsewhere.

The only couple among the sleeper spies who never pretended to be Americans, Juan Lazaro and Vicky Pelaez, reportedly have parted ways since their deportation.

Pelaez, a well-known journalist, left Russia for her native Peru, where she was cited as saying she had never spied for Russia and had no idea that her husband was a Russian agent. Her husband, whose real name is Mikhail Vasenkov, claimed to have been born in Uruguay.

"I am a nearly 60-year-old woman. I love my companion. But I may never forgive him for not being straight with me," she said in a February interview with the Peruvian magazine Caretas.

She now writes a column for the Moscow News, an English-language newspaper published by a Russian state news agency.

In her first column, Pelaez said "constant support from the Russian government and its concern about my health and the well-being of my family have brought me out of despair and given me hope for the future and a new life."

More Occupy events planned around Calif. (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? More Wall Street protests were planned around California on Saturday, including in Oakland, where police and demonstrators faced off earlier this week in a clash during which an Iraq War veteran was injured.

A rally against police brutality was scheduled for 6 p.m. in front of Oakland's city hall, and a march was expected to follow two hours later.

The Oakland protesters have also announced a strike on Nov. 2, when they will be urging banks and corporations to close for the day.

Protesters clashed with police on Tuesday after the encampment in front of city hall was cleared. Scott Olsen, a 24-year-old Iraq War veteran, suffered a fractured skull during that confrontation, and his plight has become a rallying cry at Occupy protests around the world.

Olsen remained in fair condition Friday at a hospital. Fellow veterans say police fired an object that struck Olsen in the head, but authorities say the object has yet to be definitively established, as well as the person responsible for the injury.

Oakland Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan defended the officers involved in the effort to drive protesters from the encampment, saying they used what they believed to be the least amount of force possible to protect themselves.

"I want to ensure you that all allegations of misconduct and excessive uses of force are being thoroughly investigated," Jordan said.

His comments came on Friday, the same day that left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore rallied a gathering in Oakland. Moore addressed about 1,000 anti-Wall Street protesters, saying the Occupy movement has changed the national discussion.

"When was the last time in the last few weeks you heard them talking about the debt ceiling?" said Moore, the director of the documentary films "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Bowling for Columbine."

Meanwhile, the encampment at the plaza near city hall has returned and grown to about 50 tents, with organizers saying up to a thousand people were in the area late Friday with very few police in sight.

Across San Francisco Bay, protesters were encouraged to wear Halloween costumes for a Saturday march scheduled for 3 p.m. in San Francisco, where protesters are camped out in a city plaza.

Christine Falvey, a spokeswoman for that city's mayor, Ed Lee, said he wants to avoid the type of police confrontations that happened in Oakland but that the camp cannot remain for "too many more days" because of health concerns.

Events were also planned on Saturday in Sacramento, Los Angeles and its suburbs. Protesters gathered at Van Nuys's city hall for an Occupy San Fernando Valley event, and a few dozen protesters marched peacefully through Lancaster, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, in the mostly rural Antelope Valley.

Organizer Angel Warner said the rally in the city of about 150,000 was a precursor to a full-blown Occupy Antelope Valley movement that she hopes will begin Nov. 5. The group was working on obtaining permits to set up long-term outside Lancaster's city hall.

Farther south, police in San Diego descended early Friday on an encampment that had housed demonstrators at the Civic Center Plaza and Children's Park for three weeks. They arrested 51 people who faced charges including illegal lodging, illegal drug use, unlawful assembly and blocking officers from performing their duties.

San Diego police Chief William Lansdowne said negotiations with demonstrators had broken down and officers received no cooperation, leading to the overnight raid.

In California's agricultural heartland, officials were preparing to oust a group of about 30 demonstrators from next to a Fresno County courthouse. County officials said protesters had ignored some requirements of their permit, including limiting the gathering to about 20 people. They gave notice Friday that the permit would expire midnight Monday, and that demonstrators faced jail time and $500 fines if they remained.

Yet the movement in Fresno continued to gather support. Maria Torres, 86, said she worked with Cesar Chavez as an organizer of the farmworkers' movement in the 1960s and stopped by the encampment to boost morale.

"I'm too old now to do much, but I want to be a part of it," she said in Spanish.

US man gets another 30 days in Aruba tourist case

(AP) ? A U.S. businessman who has been jailed in Aruba for nearly three months as a suspect in the death of his traveling companion must remain in custody for at least 30 more days to give investigators more time to gather and evaluate evidence, a judge on the island ruled Friday.

Aruban prosecutors announced the ruling after a closed hearing on the Dutch Caribbean island. Gary Giordano, a 50-year-old employment agency owner from Gaithersburg, Maryland, has been in jail since Aug. 5, three days after he told police companion Robyn Gardner was swept out to sea while snorkeling.

Authorities have said they believe that the 35-year-old woman is dead and that Giordano was involved. Her body has not been found, and any evidence against Giordano has not been disclosed. He has denied any wrongdoing, while his attorneys have appealed for his immediate release.

"Our client is innocent and there has been a lot of investigation already," attorney Chris Lejuez said in an interview outside court. "There is no evidence, and his life is being destroyed."

Lejuez said that during the hearing prosecutors disclosed that a DNA test confirmed that blood found on a towel came from Gardner. But the attorney said that Giordano has maintained that she cut her toe on a rock while they were on a beach and used the towel to stop the bleeding.

The same judge previously issued a 60-day detention order on Aug. 31. The prosecutor's office said in a statement that investigators needed more time to process additional evidence gathered in recent weeks, including the results of a re-enactment of the couple's snorkeling trip off the southeastern tip of the island.

Investigators are still processing some evidence, including DNA analysis and information gathered from Gardner's and Giordano's computers, and are considering a new search for Gardener's remains, said Solicitor General Taco Stein.

At the end of the new 30-day detention period, Stein said prosecutors would be expected to either bring charges against Giordano or release him. Another extension would require a higher threshold of evidence that would be difficult to obtain under Aruban law, Stein said.

(AP Photo/Evan Agostini, File)

(AP) ? Director Peter Jackson said Friday that he was working with a high-profile former American death row inmate in hopes of getting the man a complete pardon.

Jackson, best known for his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, said he received an exemption to New Zealand law to allow Damien Echols to visit him. Echols was part of a group known as the West Memphis Three who were convicted of killing three boys in the U.S. state of Arkansas in 1993. He and the other two men were released in August after pleading guilty to lesser charges and insist they are innocent.

At a news conference Friday in which Jackson stood alongside New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at the North Island set where Jackson is filming a two-part version of "The Hobbit," the director said he'd gone through the same process open to everyone in applying for an exemption to immigration laws.

"There are all sorts of emotive headlines about Damien Echols, killer, coming to New Zealand, but the reality is that Damien Echols is an innocent man who has spent 18 years incarcerated in a tiny cell," Jackson said.

The director told reporters that he and partner Fran Walsh had worked for seven or eight years to try and help free Echols.

"He's come here to work with us on a couple of things," Jackson said. "We're doing investigative work, we're doing forensic work ... with the purpose of getting a complete pardon."

Jackson clarified that Echols was not taking part in work on "The Hobbit."

Echols is one of the highest-profile death row inmates to be released in the U.S. Three HBO documentaries about his case brought national attention and sparked the involvement of several celebrities, including Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder.

Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley ? who were teenagers at the time ? were convicted of killing three 8-year-old boys who were found naked and tied in a drainage ditch in the Arkansas town of West Memphis. The case hinged on the testimony of witnesses who said they'd heard the teens talk about the killings.

Echols was the only one sentenced to death.

In 2007, lawyers representing Echols claimed that new DNA tests taken from the crime scene didn't match any of the men. In August, the men agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges and were released immediately for time served ? all the while publicly maintaining their innocence.

89% Attack the Block

All Critics (130) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (117) | Rotten (14) | DVD (4)

Attack the Block attacks the alien invasion genre with wit, energy and a cheeky insolence that makes it out of this world.

An energetic genre ride with social ambitions about race and class.

"Attack the Block" demands to be seen simply because it is a thrill - a pulse-raiser whose perfect construction and pointed wit make it one of the year's most exciting films.

The movie's amateurishly made. But the script is full of little surprises.

It's exciting, and there is plenty of gore for fans of that sort of thing, but one wishes the mix of horror and comedy leaned a little more to the horror side of the equation.

It's a doozy, offering tight and imaginative camerawork, electric thrills, and a sharp, twisty script that plays like a social satire.

There isn't a single thing I would change about the film's brisk 88-minute running time.

This year's best tribute to E.T.

Pits street kids against aliens in a fast-paced battle

Like a Brit Joe Dante, debuting writer-director Joe Cornish both respects and rattles the genre, and he transforms his low budget into a virtue.

(I)t's the ready reinvention of the whole alien invasion conceit that becomes Attack the Block's greatest artistic contribution.

Employs its sci-fi tale to wrestle with issues of race and class structure -- the sort of deep thought lost on Hollywood kingpins like Michael Bay, whose idea of sensitive racial exploration was to create Amos 'n' Andy robots for that Transformers flick.

Few movies this year have been as all-out fun to watch as this one.

The coolest part of "Attack the Block" is how it does a switcheroo with the thugs, initially encouraging us to think they're rotters and then showing us there's more to them than meets the eye.

Cornish makes a feature debut here that's almost as stunning as when his pal (and executive producer) Edgar Wright invaded the cineplex with "Shaun of the Dead."

Attack the Block wants us to believe that its heroes aren't all that bad . . . once you've given them your wallet.

A throwback monster movie made by people who clearly adore the films they're referencing.

So if you only go see one movie this weekend, please make it Attack the Block. See it twice in fact. Let's encourage good filmmaking.

Here is a shaggy monster movie that pulls double-duty as a satire of class and ethnic barriers, and how those barriers quickly disappear when we are forced to fight for our simple survival.

While it lacks originality, Attack the Block zooms along with energy and deadpan humor.

One of the greater imports to hit America since "Shaun of the Dead."

Attack the Block has a cast of nobodies, the cheesiest special effects this side of Velveeta, and it's the best sci-fi movie you'll see this summer.

The inky, somewhat shapeless beings aren't any scarier than your typical Muppet. Which is kind of a problem when you're offering an R-rated thriller.

Northern Lights Wow Michiganders (ContributorNetwork)

Stargazers and sky watchers in Michigan were treated to an impromptu display of the northern lights on Monday. These lights often appear during geomagnetic storms in the temporal zone. Astronomers say some may be visible tonight, but the accompanying storm is waning. If the auroras do reappear, it won't be as dazzling.

What are the northern lights?

The lights are created by electrically charged particles colliding in the atmosphere. They occur with geomagnetic storms or coronal mass ejections. The lights are best seen at latitudes 10 to 20 degrees from the magnetic poles. Near the South Pole, the lights are referred to as aurora australis. They normally appear around the equinoxes.

What do the lights look like?

The aurora borealis is often mistaken for some kind of forest fire lighting the sky. It generally appears as bands or curtains of hazy, glowing or undulating light. The lights may look like whorls or vortexes. They appear to hang or hover in the sky and pulsate.

What are common colors?

If the lights are green or brownish-pink. These are ionized oxygen emissions. Red and blue lights occur from nitrogen emissions. In order of appearance, green, pink, green and red in combination, pure red and yellow are the most common. Pure blue lights are the rarest. Monday's display included some of the rarer bursts of solid red.

Are aurora borealis viewings common in Michigan?

Areas of Michigan, especially in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, get fairly frequent displays. The Great Lakes, particularly Lake Superior, make a good staging area for displays of the northern lights.

Will the lights be visible tonight?

Space Weather says the geomagnetic storm is wearing off, but it could be visible. To track aurora borealis displays, follow Space Weather.

Warner Bros. Makes Harry Potter DVDs Disappear

'Harry Potter' DVDs and Blu-rays are about to get struck with an Evanesco spell. Warner Bros. announced on Monday night that it will stop shipping copies of the eight 'Potter' films to stores as of Dec. 29. That means if you don't get 'Harry Potter' DVDs during the holiday season, you likely won't be able to purchase the films again until Warner Bros. does a special re-release in the future. (Thankfully, this moratorium doesn't affect the digital platforms.) If this sounds familiar, it's because Disney has used a similar plan in the past for its archive titles. The 'Harry Potter' DVDs have grossed more than $5 billion worldwide for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Saudi Royal Family and U.S. Relations (ContributorNetwork)

Saudi heir to the throne Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz died after an illness today. He had been suffering from colon cancer and had been in New York being treated since June. He was 80 years old. Sultan was next in line to the throne of Saudi Arabia in the event that King Abdullah dies or abdicates.

President Barack Obama called Crown Prince Sultan a "valued friend " who served as the country's defense minister for more than 50 years. Throughout his time in the Saudi government, Sultan procured arms deals with the United States and was a key ally in the war on terror.

Ties between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia run deep. Here's a look at U.S.-Saudi relations over the past several decades.

Beginnings

U.S.-Saudi relations began in 1933 under the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, several years after King Abdel Aziz bin Saud unified the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following a series of military conquests. PBS states oil ties began that same year when Standard Oil dug an oil well in 1938 and Saudi Arabia's oil production began.

The country was also vital to the Allied victory in World War II. Roosevelt deemed Saudi Arabia necessary to the defense of the United States and initiated a lend-lease program for foreign aid. The U.S. then used Saudi Arabia as a way to defend the world against Communism and the Soviet Union. The Project on National Security Reform states President Dwight Eisenhower visited the nation in 1956 to shore up ties and foster security in Saudi Arabia.

Royal Family and Oil

The next ruler of Saudi Arabia took over in 1953 as Crown Prince Saud became king after his father's death. He was forced to abdicate in 1964, seven years after turning over day-to-day operations of the government to his half-brother Faisal. It was under Faisal's leadership that OPEC was founded.

Saudi Arabia became increasingly more modern thanks to the royal family and oil money. As oil exports became increasingly profitable, eventually Saudi oil interests took over the country's economy. Originally, Standard Oil and Saudi Arabia split oil profits down the middle. By 1980, Saudi Arabia gained full control of the oil wells in a series of legal agreements. By this time, the Middle Eastern country was vital to the world economy.

Wars

Ties with the United States were tested from 1991 onward. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the United States used land bases in Saudi Arabia to launch attacks against troops of Saddam Hussein. BBC reported about 5,000 to 10,000 U.S. troops were stationed in Saudi Arabia until 2003. Part of that force was used to support operations in the Iraq War of 2003.

Relations became strained in September 2001 when former Saudi national Osama bin Laden was blamed for the terrorist attacks against the United States. Salon.com reported his family's company had huge loans and financial backing from Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. Because of the oil industry, the United States has always had to rely on Saudi interests no matter how strained they might become.

Most recently, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia both condemned an apparent assassination plot on Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir in mid-October. Although not a member of the royal family, Al-Jubeir is a trusted member of the Saudi government appointed to his post by King Abdullah.

FedEx expects to ship 17M packages on busiest day

(AP) ? FedEx Corp. said Monday it expects to ship more packages this holiday season than ever before. The volume jump will be driven by cheaper packages it moves through a partnership with the U.S. Postal Service.

The world's second-largest package delivery company expects to handle 17 million packages on its busiest day, which this year is projected to fall on Dec. 12. That's 10 percent more than its busiest day last year.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, FedEx Corp. expects more than 260 million shipments, a 12 percent increase from 2010.

Investors cheered the optimistic forecast, a month after FedEx Corp. said shoppers were pulling back on spending. FedEx shares rose $2.12, or 2.7 percent, to $81.46 in afternoon trading.

The number of shipments FedEx handles at this time of year has climbed steadily through the recession as holiday shoppers skip stores and have gifts shipped after buying them online. The growth is also due in large part to its SmartPost service with the U.S. Postal Service. SmartPost parcels, mostly from online and catalog retailers, move through FedEx's network but are delivered by a postal worker.

SmartPost has been a huge growth driver for FedEx since the partnership was formed. Average daily volume in the segment grew 29 percent in FedEx's fiscal first quarter, which ended Aug. 31. Shipments are being boosted as online shopping grows, giving FedEx a bigger slice of the market.

Overall, holiday shopping is expected to be up from last year, but the rate of growth is not nearly as fast as previous years. Retail sales in the U.S. are expected to grow 2.8 percent in November and December to $465.6 billion, according to the National Retail Federation, far below 2010's 5.2 percent increase. The forecast is slightly higher than the average growth rate over the last decade of 2.6 percent. About 46.7 percent of shoppers are expected to buy online, compared with 43.9 percent last year.

FedEx, based in Memphis, Tenn., plans to add about 20,000 seasonal workers to handle the surge, up from 17,000 last year.

Last month FedEx said that while it's seeing signs that the economy is slowing down, it's not predicting a recession. Still, a pullback in consumer spending prompted the company to lower its earnings expectations for the fiscal year that ends in May.

FedEx's larger rival, Atlanta-based United Parcel Service Inc., hasn't yet released peak day predictions. In a note to clients on Monday, Dahlman Rose & Co. analyst Jason Seidl said he doesn't expect holiday shipment growth at UPS to be as a robust as FedEx, because it doesn't have a segment similar to SmartPost.

Seidl said he expects UPS to be more cautiously optimistic about its business and the economy in general when it reports third-quarter financial results Tuesday.

UPS shares rose 68 cents in afternoon trading to $70.74.

(AP) ? The U.S. secretary of state on Saturday urged Afghanistan's Central Asian neighbors to play a role in securing and rebuilding the country as American forces withdraw over the next three years.

Hillary Rodham Clinton also pressed authorities in the region about improving their record on human rights.

Clinton told an audience in Tajikistan that Afghanistan's reintegration into the regional economy would be critical to its recovery from war, as well as for better conditions in surrounding countries.

Afghanistan has been at "the crossroads for terrorism and insurgency and so much pain and suffering over 30 years," she said. "We want Afghanistan to be at the crossroads of economic opportunities going north and south and east and west, which is why it's so critical to more fully integrate the economies of the countries in this region in South and Central Asia."

Clinton was promoting the concept of a "new Silk Road" that would increase regional trade and commerce.

"We hope it will give rise to a network of thriving economic relationships around the region," she said. But, Clinton added, countries would have to remove or ease trade restrictions and reform commercial laws for the plan to succeed.

On human rights, Clinton told a town hall meeting in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, that she would raise the issue with the leaders of both Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

She said she spoke to Tajikistan's president, Emomali Rakhmon, about her concerns over restrictions on media and religious freedoms. In particular, she cited attempts to register certain faiths and efforts to discourage younger people from embracing the worship of their choice.

Tajikistan, a Muslim nation with a secular government, is keen to prevent its youth from adopting extremist Islamic views.

But this kind of strategy, Clinton warned, often backfires.

"It could push legitimate religious expression underground and that could build up a lot of unrest and discontent," she told reporters at a news conference with the Tajik foreign minister. "You have to look at the consequences. We don't want to do anything that breeds extremism."

U.S. officials said she brought a similar message to Uzbek President Islam Karimov, who they said has pledged during their 2?-hour meeting in Tashkent to put in place reforms.

Clinton defended her meeting with Karimov, whose government has been accused of serious rights abuses.

"If you have no contact, you have no influence," she said. "And other countries will fill that vacuum who do not care about human rights, who do not care about fundamental freedoms. So despite the challenge, I would rather be having meetings raising these uncomfortable issues, pressing for change, than to be totally outside and let others come in that only want commercial, political, and other advantages."

Human Rights Watch has called on her to link improvements to continued U.S. engagement.

Clinton was the highest-ranking American official to visit Tashkent since the U.S. last month lifted 7-year-old restrictions on assistance to the country. The restrictions were imposed because of rights abuses.

Clinton arrived in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe on Friday from stops in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where she demanded greater cooperating in dealing with militants and encouraging insurgents to talk peace.

Clinton is at the tail end of a weeklong, seven-nation overseas trip that has already taken her to Malta, Libya, Oman, Afghanistan and Pakistan. She planned to return to Washington on Sunday.

Christina Aguilera may be a hit on The Voice, but she feels like a failure because of her body.

After trying a personal trainer, a dietician and even a hypnotist, the 30-year-old star can?t seem to slim down. ?Christina hates her thunder thighs,? a friend tells In Touch, noting the singer is hiding behind black clothes.

Kelly Osbourne, for one, is enjoying Christina's weight woes. ?She called me fat for years,? she said. ?I was never that fat.?

New Rochelle, NY, October 20, 2011Spas that offer massage therapy using fragrant essential oils, called aromatherapy, may have elevated levels of potentially harmful indoor air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ultrafine particles, according to an article in Environmental Engineering Science, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.. The article is available free online at www.liebertpub.com/ees

Fragrant essential oils, derived from plants, may release various VOCs into the air. VOC degradation caused by the reaction of these compounds with ozone present in the air can produce small, ultrafine byproducts called secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), which may cause eye and airway irritation.

Taiwanese researchers Der-Jen Hsu (National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology), Hsiao-Lin Huang (Chia-Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, Tainan), and Shiann-Cherng Sheu (Chang-Jung Christian University, Tainan) tested both fragrant and Chinese herbal essential oils for SOA formation in a controlled-environment study chamber under different test conditions. They also performed air sampling and analysis in spa centers that offer massage therapy using essential oils.

The authors compared SOA levels associated for the various fragrant and herbal essential oils tested and present their results in the article, "Characteristics of Air Pollutants and Assessment of Potential Exposure in Spa Centers during Aromatherapy." They conclude that the layout and ventilation within a particular spa may affect the level of indoor air pollutants produced during massage with aromatherapy.

"Dr. Der-Jen Hsu and his colleagues have done a very nice job in bringing attention to often overlooked health risks associated with luxuries intended to enhance our sense of well-being," says Domenico Grasso, PhD Editor-in-Chief and Vice President for Research, Dean of the Graduate College, University of Vermont (Burlington).

Lindsay Lohan Mug Shot, Take Five: Me So Pouty!

Yesterday was not Lindsay Lohan's best day ... aesthetically or legally.

After showing up for court with her makeup applied haphazardly and dressed like a ghost for reasons unknown, she was briefly jailed for violating probation before posting $100,000 bail ... standard operating procedure for LiLo.

Before her release, she joined our celebrity mug shots gallery again:

Lindsay Lohan Mug Shot (New)

Most mugshots don't tell you a whole lot about the person, but if your impression was that Lindsay is a whiny, pouty brat ... this isn't gonna dissuade you.

She'll be back in court for a full hearing Nov. 2, at which point Judge Stephanie Sautner could reinstate her probation, or send her to jail for a long ass time.

Short story: Linds is on probation in her necklace heist case, but is a Class A f*%k-up who cannot even do community service without getting kicked out.

She was handcuffed and thrown in jail yesterday mostly to send a message. If she can't convince the judge Nov. 2 that she has it together, watch out.

Should Lindsay do hard time?

NASA Sets Guidelines to Preserve Apollo Moon Landing Sites (SPACE.com)

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico ? NASA has begun drafting guidelines to protect the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 landing sites, listing them as off-limits, and including ground-travel buffers and no-fly zones to avoid spraying rocket exhaust or dust onto aging, but historic, equipment.

Robert Kelso, NASA?s director of lunar commercial services at Johnson Space Center in Houston, has taken a hard look at future revisits to the Apollo sites and how to protect U.S. government artifacts on the moon.

Kelso has carved out a set of guidelines intended to safeguard the historic and scientific value of more than three dozen "heritage sites" on the lunar surface.?

The report, which was released on July 20, is titled "NASA?s Recommendations to Space-Faring Entities: How to Protect and Preserve the Historic and Scientific Value of U.S. Government Lunar Artifacts."?[Photos: NASA's Apollo Moon Missions]

A greater urgency for guidelines has been sparked by the Google Lunar X Prize?s offer of $20 million to any private team that lands a robotic rover on the moon?s surface. An additional $4 million has been offered for any team that snaps pictures of artifacts near or at the Apollo landing sites.

Key question

For Kelso, a key question is: "As the small commercial landers make preparations for possible visits to these historic sites, how do we protect these culturally significant sites from damage so that we can inspect them historically and scientifically?"

The recommendations listed by NASA are intended to apply to U.S. government artifacts on the lunar surface, such as:

  • Apollo lunar surface landing and roving hardware;
  • Unmanned lunar surface landing sites (e.g., Surveyor robotic landing sites) and impact sites, such as those of NASA's Ranger spacecraft, as well as the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) that slammed into the moon in October 2009;
  • U.S. government experiments left on the lunar surface, tools, equipment, miscellaneous moonwalking gear; and
  • Specific indicators of U.S. human, human-robotic lunar presence, including footprints and rover tracks.

Archaeological input

A recognized leader in the emerging field of space heritage and archaeology is Beth O?Leary, an anthropology professor here at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

O?Leary has spent more than a decade working with historians and archaeologists researching how to study and curate human artifacts on the moon. [Photos: Our Changing Moon]

Given a small grant from NASA and the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium, O?Leary spearheaded work through a Lunar Legacy Project that investigated protection of the Apollo 11 landing site.

?There is a need for more archaeological input into the process of protecting what is certainly humanity?s most extraordinary series of events that led us off the Earth and onto the Moon,? O?Leary told SPACE.com.

The recent capacities of NASA?s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) ? now circling the moon ? has? demonstrated that the probe could be used by archaeologists as an important remote sensing tool for identifying and mapping historic lunar sites.?

Keep-out zones

O?Leary said that the NASA guidelines create a series of keep-out zones and boundaries around the historic artifacts and features at all Apollo sites. Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 are acknowledged as having special historical and cultural significance, she said.

Those two locales are treated as unique by prohibiting visits to any part of these sites, and all future visiting vehicles would remain beyond the "artifact boundaries" of each entire site.

"This provides a robust zone of protection around these two sites," O?Leary said.

In the NASA study ? for hopper configuration landers that are able to perform "low-altitude"/tangential fly-bys of identified sites ? special guidelines have been written to ensure negligible plume interactions at the surface.

High heritage value

"For me, the NASA document represents a giant leap for lunar historic preservation," O?Leary explained. "NASA references its ownership of its lunar hardware and the need for protecting what it calls 'witness plates' or 'lunar assets' ? those significant artifacts it created in the past that are now on the moon. This is a critical first step and many more have to follow, but for the first time NASA formally recognizes the heritage value of Apollo 11 and other extraordinary lunar sites."

The NASA report also recognizes there have been no human impacts to the sites, which are in pristine, undisturbed condition except for the effects of the space environment.??

"Importantly, it recognizes that future missions can disturb or change the earlier lunar sites in ways that scientific and historic information can be lost," O?Leary said. Also, some of the sites are still active and continue to provide data ? such as Apollo retro-reflectors used to measure the distance between the Earth and moon via laser ranging.

"It was time for a preservation strategy," O?Leary said.
