50 treated after University of Virginia student diagnosed with meningitis

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? More than 40 University of Virginia students have received antibiotics after another student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, The Daily Progress is reporting.

According to the paper, executive director of student health Dr. James Turner says the infected student is recovering.

Turner tells The Daily Progressthat 47 students who had direct contract with the infected student have been treated for the disease.

Bacterial meningitis is a potentially fatal disease. Early onset symptoms include fever, headache, a stiff neck, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light.
