Apple and Samsung set to meet May 21st, hug it out over 48 hours

These two brawlers were given until July to come together and mediate over their numerous globe-spanning patent lawsuits, but it appears neither side needs to wait that long. According to Foss Patents, May 21st and 22nd have been circled on the calendar of a certain San Francisco courthouse, where Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero will attempt to arbitrate in a calm, soothing voice for two days straight. Presenting himself as a confidant who sits outside of the main litigation being conducted in San Jose, Spero has already asked both parties to open up and provide "candid" statements about the strengths and weaknesses of their own cases, as a first step towards identifying areas of compromise. Fortunately, he still has a few weeks in which to devise further cunning plans.

Samsung May Have Just Become The King Of Mobile Handsets, While S&P Downgrades Nokia To Junk

Image (1) samsung_logo_crown-300x268.jpg for post 47500Samsung has been, for years, slowly approaching Nokia as the world's biggest handset maker, and today looks like the day the crown has been passed: As of last quarter, Strategy Analytics noted that Samsung shipped the most mobile devices of any single manufacturer world-wide, also taking pole position in smartphones. At the same time, Nokia not only slipped in those rankings but it also got another slap in the face, as Standard & Poor's, the credit-rating agency, downgraded Nokia to "junk" status. The news comes on the same day that Samsung presented its Q1 earnings, in which the Korean company reported revenues of 45 trillion won ($40 billion) for the three months that ended March 31 -- citing strong results in the division that includes mobile devices, with especially "brisk sales" of its GALAXY S II smartphone and newer Galaxy Note device.

Target Neutralized: Amazon Beats Tablet Makers At Their Own Game

913d4_funny-dog-pictures-target-acquiredWith the announcement that the Kindle Fire has grabbed 54.4% of the Android Tablet market, it's clear to see that Amazon's Trojan Horse strategy paid off. As I wrote back in December, the Fire is Amazon's way of making all of their offerings "real." Movies, books, and games were Amazon's core competency back when all of that stuff was on disks and on paper and that core competency is repurposed now for the Information Age. That's what all of the other Android tablet makers missed: people don't want general-purpose devices anymore or at least general-purpose devices in tablet form. There is little need to be "productive" on a tablet when consumption is why most people buy them. Sure someone out there is SSHing into their servers and editing documents in Pages, but the average user plops down on the couch with the iPad and calls up some IMDB or some NSFW Reddit, not a text editor.

Usher Makes Fans 'Scream' With New Dance Single

Club track is second release from singer's upcoming Looking for Myself.

With nine #1s, Usher is easily one of the most reliable hitmakers in the game, and he may have just found his next smash hit. The R&B superstar released his latest single, "Scream," on Thursday (April 26), and it has chart-topper written all over it.

The Max Martin-produced banger finds Usher in familiar territory, singing the virtues of living for the moment — just as he did on 2010's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," which was also helmed by Martin. With a pounding beat and a massive, swelling hook, the song returns Usher to the club after his recent foray into slow-jam territory with "Climax," the Diplo-produced first single from his forthcoming Looking for Myself.

"I see you over there, so hypnotic Thinking 'bout what I do to that body/ I get you like ooh baby baby," Ush sings. "Got no drink in my hand/ But I'm wasted/ Getting drunk off the thought of you naked/ I get you like ooh baby baby."

In addition to his own new album, Usher also recently hit the studio with David Guetta to record a follow-up to their hugely successful collaboration "Without You." Usher made a surprise appearance during Guetta's set at Coachella on April 14.

"These are really big records that we're working on right now," Guetta told The Hollywood Reporter of his new track with Ush. "It's really crazy."

Head to our Newsroom blog to see why it's time for an Usher greatest-hits album.

Looking for Myself is set for release on June 12 and is expected to be released in both standard and deluxe editions. The album is Usher's follow-up to his 2010 smash Raymond v. Raymond, which produced the massive singles "OMG" and "There Goes My Baby."

For his new record, Usher returned to work with many of his Raymond collaborators, including Rico Love and Jim Jonsin, as well as Diplo, Martin and Salaam Remi, who is best known for his work with Nas and the late Amy Winehouse.

DIY Cellphone has the footprint of an ice cream sandwich, definitely doesn't run ICS (hands-on)

Image

Building your own wireless communications device isn't for the faint of heart, or the law-abiding -- the FCC tends to prefer placing its own stamp of approval on devices that utilize US airwaves, making a homegrown mobile phone an unlikely proposition. That didn't stop a team at the MIT Media Lab from creating such a DIY kit, however. Meet the Do-It-Yourself Cellphone. This wood-based mobile rig, while it's currently in the prototype phase (where it may indefinitely remain), would eventually ship with a circuit board, control pad, a fairly beefy antenna and a monochrome LCD. Sounds like it'd be right at home at some kid's garage workshop in the early '80s, not showcased at an MIT open house. The argument here is that people spend more time with their phone than with any other device, so naturally they'd want to build one to their liking. Nowadays, folks expect their pocketable handset to enable them to not only place and receive phone calls, but also store phone numbers, offer a rechargeable battery, and, well, in some cases even send and receive email, and surf the web -- none of which are available with such a kit.

The prototype we saw was fully functional. It could place calls. It could receive calls. There was even Caller ID! The phone does indeed feel homemade, with its laser-cut plywood case and a design that lacks some of the most basic gadget essentials, like a rechargeable battery (or at very least some provisions for replacing the 9-volt inside without unscrewing the case). Audio quality sounded fine, and calls went out and came in without a hitch -- there's a SIM card slot inside, letting you bring the nondescript phone to the carrier of your choice. Does it work? Yes. Is it worth dropping $100-150 in parts to build a jumbo-sized phone with a microscopic feature set? No, there's definitely nothing smart about the DIY Cellphone. If you want to throw together your own handset, however, and not risk anyone questioning the legitimacy of your homemade claim, you might want to keep an eye out for this to come to market. The rest of you will find everything you need in the video just past the break. We're just happy to have walked away without any splinters.

Friendster reborn as a gaming site, wishes Facebook cared

Image

Friendster's as good as dead to the western world (it hasn't really crossed our radar since 2005), but Forbes reports that the site is still huge in Southeast Asia -- though not for the reasons you might think. It was the original social network when in launched in 2002, but its acquisition by e-payment provider MOL Global in 2009 led to its reincarnation as a top online gaming destination for countries such as India, Indonesia and Malaysia. The new Friendster just officially emerged from beta as a game-centric site, and the remaining vestiges of its social networking past -- you can still add friends, after all -- are gamified with reward points. Moreover, owner MOL Global has added e-payments to the mix, letting users buy Friendster Coins to purchase virtual goods. Given predictions that the Asian gaming community will exceed 1 billion by 2016, the site's future is looking rosier than ever. That might lessen the sting of being plum blown out of the social networking game by the big dogs.
