Lindbergh Links: From Here to Dubai, Classic Car Dealer Sells to ...

The longest road in the St. Louis area, Lindbergh Boulevard runs roughly 30 miles through north, central and south county, touching nine of our Patch sites. On this anniversary of namesake Charles Lindbergh?s death, we wanted to take a look at this road from our nine different perspectives. Each Patch editor has a different take on how Lindbergh touches that community. Drive along with us through our Lindbergh Links ? and we hope you?ll add your own observations along the way.

Lindbergh Boulevard is made for driving, and what better way to cruise the road than in a vintage automobile? Locals are lucky?they have a classic car dealer just across the Maryland Heights city limits.

Daniel Schmitt and Co. Luxury Car Gallery is situated along Lindbergh Boulevard near Maryland Heights. The company?s president, Daniel Schmitt, said the gallery has been at the Lindbergh location for 22 years. Schmitt responded to Maryland Heights Patch?s questions about his gallery via email.

Maryland Heights Patch: Where do you find your inventory?

Daniel Schmitt: We have a company airplane, and we fly all over the country in search of new classics.

Patch:?What?s the most expensive car you?ve sold in the past??

Schmitt:?Just sold a four-car package for $650,000 this week, which included a 1938 Packard for nearly $300,000.

Patch:?What?s the market like for collectible?cars?

Schmitt:?The market is very strong and getting stronger every day.? Even through the most recent recession, collector?cars?have steadily gone up in value, mainly due to the new global market opened up by the Internet.

Patch:?Where do your customers come from? St. Louis? Other parts of Missouri? Other states?

Schmitt:?We sell less than 1 percent into Missouri, and 50 percent go overseas. We have recently sold?cars?into New Zealand, Australia, Dubai, Brazil, Russia, and just this week we shipped out two 1969 Corvette?s to a Sheikh in Qatar.

Patch:?What is your personal favorite automobile?

Schmitt:?1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyde

Patch:?How do contemporary?cars?compare to those of past decades? Are newer models as well built?

Schmitt:?The newer models are much better designed and built. The allure of the classics is in the artful design.
