Ex-News International legal chief arrested

The former legal advisor to Rupert Murdoch's News International newspaper group was arrested by police investigating alleged phone hacking.

Tom Crone, 60, was held at his home in London on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications and was taken for questioning at a police station before being bailed to return on a date in mid-October.

He is the 25th person to be arrested under Operation Weeting, the Metropolitan Police's investigation into allegations of phone hacking, mainly at the now-defunct News of the World.

The probe is being run alongside two separate investigations -- Operation Elveden, which is looking at alleged corrupt payments to public officials, and Operation Tuleta, which concerns accusations of computer hacking and other privacy breaches including the alleged hacking of stolen mobile phones.

So far 43 people have been arrested under Elveden and 11 under Tuleta.

Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International and once a close aide to Murdoch, is due to appear at a magistrates court in London on Monday on phone hacking charges, which she denies.

Brooks is accused of one general charge of conspiracy to illegally access voicemails, and two others relating to murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and a former union boss.

Seven other people including David Cameron's former spin doctor Andy Coulson appeared at the same court earlier this month to face phone hacking charges.

The group includes six senior members of News of the World staff, who all face the general charge alongside Brooks, as well as specific counts linked to individual cases.

Murdoch shut down the News of the World in July last year after the extent of phone hacking at the tabloid emerged.

The scandal led to a public inquiry into press ethics being set up.

US: Helping Foster Kids Even After Adoption

Aug 28, NPR: The U.S. adoption system was largely organized around placing infants, both from this country and abroad. But, it turns out that, by far, the largest number of adoptions in the U.S. is through the foster care system. That means toddlers, young children, even teens. Yet many in the field say the system does little to help families cope with the special issues a number of these children will face, even years after adoption. Foster adoptions have nearly doubled since 1997, when a policy change gave states financial incentive to place children with permanent families. The federal government has also waged an aggressive and charming ad campaign, with TV spots reassuring people that they ?don?t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent.? Debbie Riley, head of the Center for Adoption Support and Education in Maryland, says she is seeing an increasing number of ?disruptions.? ?Families are calling and saying, ?I can?t do this,? and [they're] putting children back into [foster] care?. MI: Saginaw?s Top Catholic Bishop To Be Named in Philadelphia Clergy Sex Abuse Lawsuit

Aug 27, Saginaw News: Attorneys plan to name the leader of the Diocese of Saginaw in a lawsuit surrounding clergy sex abuse allegations at his former assignment in Philadelphia, media reports indicate. Bishop Joseph Cistone earlier this year was not named in any criminal indictments, but lawyers say Cistone and others will be named in a civil case brought on by a former Philadelphia altar boy who claimed sexual abuse in 1992. ?My best description of them is that they were the kingpins,? Slade McLaughlin, a Philadelphia attorney, told the news station when describing Cistone and another former Catholic administrator in Philadelphia. Link to Article

GA: Georgia Makes Parent Volunteers In Schools Mandatory Child Abuse Reporters. Is That A Mistake?

Aug 26, AJC.com: Schools in Georgia are now informing parents of a law passed this year that broadens the list of people mandated to report child abuse. The list now includes volunteers at churches, colleges, clubs, summer camps or soccer fields or parents who chaperone a field trip. They could go to jail if they fail to report suspected abuse. MA: Program Helps Families Create Their Own Solutions

Aug 26, Boston Globe: The Family Independence Initiative, which recruits families, urges them to identify their aspirations, and pays them $160 a month to record their progress toward achieving them. The central idea behind the initiative is that poor people have the resourcefulness to solve their own problems. That with the support ? and the watchful eyes ? of a small community of peers, they can transform their lives. The results so far have been stunning. Among the first families to join these groups two years ago, personal savings have grown a massive 264 percent. Average monthly incomes have risen 25 percent, not counting FII payments. Children?s grades have jumped 25 percent, too. Members have started businesses, bought houses, enrolled in college, begun microloan programs, gotten care for sick children, lost weight, and found community. Link to Article

US: Finding Hope after Trauma: The Remarkable Recovery of the Adolescent Brain

Aug 26, Huffington Post: A 2005 study conducted by Casey Family Programs found rates of PTSD in young people formerly in foster care to be more than twice that of U.S. war veterans.
Young people who have experienced trauma are extraordinarily resilient. Nowhere is this clearer than among the population of young people who have been in foster care. Trauma comes in all forms, and whether the trauma young people in foster care experience is defined by physical or sexual abuse, moving from place to place, being separated from siblings and other loved ones, or living in a disjointed system ? its impact can be devastating. Without access to a supportive family or network, young people in foster care ? especially those who abruptly age out of the foster care system ? don?t have the same opportunity to recover and move on. And yet, it is precisely during that window of their young lives ? between ages 14 and 25 ? that young people have the most potential for recovery and resilience. New advances in neuroscience tell us that the brain is not ?done? by age six, as previously thought. Instead, the adolescent brain continues to develop, providing a ?use it or lose it? timeframe similar to that which exists in early childhood. Even after significant trauma, the brain can indeed rewire itself ? meaning that the physiological consequences of trauma can be reversed. Systems that support young people must seize this window of opportunity. Link to Article

Young and Alone, Facing Court and Deportation

Aug 25, New York Times: Immigration courts in this South Texas border town and across the country are confronting an unexpected surge of children, some of them barely school age, who traveled here without parents and were caught as they tried to cross illegally into the United States. The youths pose troubling difficulties for American immigration courts. Unlike in criminal or family courts, in immigration court there is no right to a lawyer paid by the government for people who cannot afford one. And immigration law contains few protections specifically for minors. So even a child as young as six years old has to go before an immigration judge ? confronting a prosecutor and trying to fight deportation ? without the help of a lawyer, if one is not privately provided. US: Special Visa Program Offers Citizenship Path For Illegal Immigrant Youth In Foster Care

Aug 27, Washington Post: Two years ago, her mother was deported, her brother was detained and she was put in foster care. A powerful reminder of all she lost and gained is printed on the top right corner of her green card: ?SL6.? That?s the code for special immigrant juvenile status (SIJS), the little-known program that allows Boudet and hundreds like her each year to live and work in the U.S. as a legal permanent resident. The program has quietly helped 10,000 young illegal immigrants become legal permanent residents since 1997. More recently, much attention has been focused on President Barack Obama?s deferred action policy that allows some young illegal immigrants to avoid deportation by obtaining temporary work permits. Thousands flocked to apply for that program on the first day alone. Advocates say that the new Obama administration policy won?t directly change the juvenile visa program, and that it?s too soon to tell exactly how the visa program may be affected by the policy change. But it may make young illegal immigrants more comfortable coming forward for help staying in the U.S. That could lead to more people applying for the visa. The policy change also gives them another option if they don?t qualify for the special visa program because of key requirements to be under the age of 21, unmarried and a dependent of the state at the time of the application. ?Link to Article

US: As Thousands of Parents Are Deported, US Citizen Kids Face Fallout; Some Placed For Adoption

Aug 25, Associated Press: It?s a question thousands of other families are wrestling with as a record number of deportations means record numbers of American children being left without a parent. And it comes despite President Barack Obama?s promise that his administration would focus on removing only criminals, not breaking up families even if a parent is here illegally. Nearly 45,000 such parents were removed in the first six months of this year, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Critics say the parents are to blame for entering the country illegally in the first place, knowing they were putting their families at risk. These parents have taken a reckless gamble with their children?s future by sneaking into the country illegally, knowing they could be deported. ?Not to deport them, gives them the ultimate bonus package, and creates an incentive for others to do the same thing.? Others, including Obama, say splitting up families is wrong. A year ago, he told a Texas audience that deportation should target ?violent offenders and people convicted of crimes; not families, not folks who are just looking to scrape together an income.? And, last year ICE announced a new policy of ?prosecutorial discretion? that directs agents to consider how long someone has been in the country, their ties to communities and whether that person?s spouse or children are U.S. citizens.

In Congress, California Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard has proposed legislation that would make it more difficult for local agencies to terminate the parental rights of immigrants. She calls it ?heartbreaking ? that in the U.S., immigration status in itself has become grounds to permanently separate families.? It is, she said, ?absolutely, unquestionably inhumane and unacceptable, particularly for a country that values family and fairness so highly.? Link to Article

WI: Father Reaches Settlement with Welfare Workers in Death of Infant Son

Aug. 24, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: The father of a 5-month-old boy who was drowned by his mentally ill mother in October 2007 has settled his federal lawsuit against three child welfare workers and their employers, according to online court records. The suit, filed in federal court in Milwaukee, alleged wrongful death and a violation of the 14th Amendment. When Will Robert Johnson was just 1 month old, child welfare workers removed him from his mother?s home because they feared that her serious mental illness compromised his safety. Yet four months later, social workers left him alone with her for a visit, and he drowned in the bathtub. Two social workers and a supervisor were named as defendants. The three and their employers, which had contracted with the state, knew or should have known Will?s mother, Arkisha Johnson, had a long history of mental illness, which included threats of violence, emotional instability, multiple suicide attempts and failure to take her medication, according to the suit. In October 2010, the Child Welfare Disclosure Act was passed without opposition by state lawmakers and quickly signed by the governor. It requires the state Department of Children and Families to notify the public when a child has been killed or suffered serious injury. Link to Article

MA: Children?s Rights Chides Mass. System on Foster Care

August 24, Boston Globe: A children?s advocacy group has issued a series of scathing reports on the Massachusetts foster care system, contending that nearly 1 in 5 children in state custody for at least two years have suffered abuse or neglect. The group, called Children?s Rights, released the reports Thursday as part of a federal class-action lawsuit it brought against the state?s child welfare system in 2010. It asserts that children are mistreated at a high rate under state care, that they often bounce from one foster home to the next, and that they sometimes stay in the foster system for years. Approximately 1 in 6 who are reunited with their families return to foster care after further abuse or neglect, the group says. In several reports submitted by child welfare specialists, the group said the state?s Department of Children and Families is plagued by dysfunction, low staffing, and lax oversight. Link to Article

ID: 3-Year-Old Idaho Child Reunited With Father in Mexico

Aug 23, Miami Herald: A young girl whose custody case was ultimately decided by the Idaho Supreme Court traveled to Mexico earlier this week to begin living with a father she had never met before. Maria Ramirez, 3, flew to Mexico on Monday and was handed over to her father, Jesus Ramirez, to begin a new life with him and his family in Salamanca, a small town in central Mexico, according to officials with the Consulate of Mexico in Boise. In April, the Idaho Supreme Court ruled that a lower court erred in severing the man?s parental rights even though he had never met his daughter, initially came to the U.S. illegally and was barred from ever returning. The Idaho Department of Health and Human Services argued to have the father?s custody rights severed as the agency explored placement options for the child after officials removed the girl from the mother?s home. Mexican officials in Boise cheered the girl?s transfer to her father?s custody and the legal process that affirmed the rights of birth parents over questions of a parent?s immigration status. Link to Article? Comment by C. Enright: How can someone be reunited with a parent she had never met? This must be a very traumatic experience for this girl.

US: For Chinese-American Adoptees, Matters of Identity

Aug 23, NPR: Of the roughly 80,000 Chinese children adopted in the United States since 1979, almost all are girls, abandoned at birth by their parents because of China?s one-child policy, coupled with inheritance laws that favor boys. Waiting for them at this end was the pent-up parental longing of thousands of infertile couples, single women (and a few single men) and gay and lesbian couples. This is hardly unexplored territory, but until now most of the copious commentary on Chinese adoption has come from the parents? point of view. Now some of the girls are old enough to speak for themselves, and Linda Goldstein Knowlton, a Hollywood producer and an adoptive mother herself, picks up their story in Somewhere Between, a warm-hearted if somewhat over-orchestrated documentary that gives voice to four teenaged adoptees from loving but very different homes. It also would prohibit registered sex offenders from representing minors. Link to Article

CA: Social Workers Build Bridges to Find Homes for Foster Children Living on the Street

Aug 21, Los Angeles Times: L.A. County?s staying connected to juveniles on the street via Facebook, family ties and foot patrols and placing them when they?re ready. The Department of Children?s and Family Services doesn?t have enough famil y foster homes for parent-less adolescents. Unhappy teens who run away become wards of the Probation Department because they?re considered delinquents. The two agencies barely talk to one another, so those children languish on the streets and are often victimized by thieves, drug dealers and pimps. Four years ago, in the wake of a scandal over hundreds of unaccounted-for children the foster care agency agreed to try an unconventional approach, forming a small Runaway Outreach Unit that relies not on hauling kids in from the streets, but building trust to bring them back. ?The old way wasn?t working,? said the unit?s leader, social worker Eric Ball. Since 2008, his team ? using Facebook, family connections and foot patrols ? has located 1,500 missing youths and eased 500 into independent living and out of foster care, he said. ?The important thing is to make contact and begin to earn their trust,? Ball told me Saturday, from a crowded downtown community center, where his team had gathered hundreds of their teenage wards for a daylong conference on healthy living. ?We?re trying to empower them,? Ball said. ?Nobody likes being told what to do.? Link to Article

IN: Some Judges, Police Call Department of Child Services Child Abuse Hotline ?Frustrating,? ?Inefficient?

Aug 21: IndyStar.com: Department of Child Services officials call the agency?s centralized child abuse hotlinea ?model for other states,? ?one of the most up-to-date and effective? in the nation. The hotline?s workers in Indianapolis answer calls promptly and effectively 24 hours a day, the state officials say, delivering consistent results for children in all of the state?s 92 counties. But local officials who have been using the centralized hotline since it went into effect in 2010 paint a different picture. They use descriptions such as ?constant problem,? ?very frustrating? and ?inefficient.? ?They do not seem to understand the issues that are actually going on in the field,? a Warrick County sheriff?s detective says. A Knox City police detective is more blunt: ?Children are not getting the help they need.? Those comments are contained in responses to an informal survey conducted by Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, which he shared exclusively with The Indianapolis Star. Link to Article ?See also: Link to Courier Press Article and Link to Indiana Public Radio Article

FL: Florida Turns Down $4.9 Million from Federal Government Designed to Strengthen Parenting

August 21,Tampa Bay Times: Kimberly Dudley says she is grateful for the agency Healthy Start, which sent an educator into her home to help her get off drugs and prevent her kids from being shipped to foster care. ?If I didn?t have the program, I would be homeless with a premie,? said Dudley, 21, a Clearwater mother of two young children. Now the program is in danger. Earlier this month, the Florida Department of Health turned down a $4.9 million federal grant that already has helped 84 Pinellas County families and hundreds more statewide. The department was forced to turn down the money after the Florida Legislature refused to accept it. Some state lawmakers were upset because the program is connected to the Affordable Care Act, also known as ?Obamacare.? Link to Article

FL: State?s DCF Removes Child Protective Investigation Function Away from Sheriff?s Office

Aug 20, Citrus Daily: The state?s Department of Children and Families (DCF) has taken child protective investigations away from the Citrus County Sheriff?s Office. Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said the DCF?s move was totally unanticipated. ?I never saw it coming,? said Dawsy. ?I?m shocked.? The DCF has optioned to bring Citrus County?s child protective investigations (CPI) back in-house, effective as of Oct. 31. DCF?s precise reasoning is cloudy, but the state agency has said that the performance and measurable outcomes of the program under the Sheriff?s Office was never in question. The DCF exercised the exit clause in a one-year contract, signed earlier this year, to keep the program under the auspices of the Sheriff?s Office. After hearing the news, Sheriff Dawsy promised to make the transition of services as smooth as possible, although he admitted to worries about the safety of the county?s children. The Sheriff?s Office said today that the DCF?s decision in no way impacts the six other Florida sheriffs who currently perform the same CPI function. No additional info in article.

GA: Degarmo Publishes Book on Foster Parenting

Aug 20, Jackson Progress-Argus: John DeGarmo has worked as an English and drama teacher, managed a day care center, hosted various radio shows throughout both the United States and Australia, and even worked in the field of professional wrestling. He is currently serving as a media specialist at both Jasper County High and Middle schools. He recently earned his doctorate and he published his doctoral dissertation on the challenges that foster children face in public schools. ?Fostering Love: One Foster Parent?s Journey,? according to DeGarmo, was about his own personal experiences with the foster care system. It takes actual events that have taken place in his first nine years as a foster family and puts them in writing. He uses the perspective of himself as the parent and the stories form from how each experience affected him and his own children. Link to Article

GA: Court Cases Show Challenge of Prosecuting Child Abuse

Aug 18, Augusta Chronicle: The challenges of prosecuting crimes against children were on full display the past two weeks in the Augusta judicial circuit. jurors delivered a partial acquittal of Corduray Scott, who was charged with fatally squeezing and shaking his 3-month-old son, Corduray Jr., in 2010. While convinced Scott was guilty of felony murder, they cleared him of killing the boy with malice. The week before in Columbia County, jurors deadlocked after 11 hours of deliberations could not produce a verdict in the case of Lawanda Concettes Tripp, a baby sitter accused in the 2009 death of a 22-month-old toddler. Former assistant district attorney Adam King said the prosecution walks into a trial with the jury?s sympathy for a child victim. But the advantage is limited ? human nature makes it hard to believe someone could be so cold-hearted they would harm a child, King said. ?That sympathy cuts both ways,? he said. The same can be said of the scientific and medical evidence. Link to Article

Court: Michigan Court of Appeals (Unpublished)
Case Name: In re Mullins

The court held that because the trial court intended that the child should be allowed to maintain a relationship with the respondents-parents, it clearly erred in finding that termination was in the child?s best interests. Thus, the court vacated the termination order and remanded for further consideration of the best interest factors. In an order issued concurrently with its opinion, the court set a schedule for the proceedings on remand, and retained jurisdiction. In the consolidated appeals, both parents challenged the termination of their parental rights to their infant son (TM). The petitioner-DHS presented clear and convincing evidence that at least one statutory ground supported termination. However, the trial court did not properly consider TM?s placement with his paternal grandmother when deciding whether termination was in his best interests. The court noted that relative placement is relevant to the best interest analysis because the relative may be open to allowing the parent to maintain a relationship with the child, which may be in the child?s best interest even if the parent is not a fit full-time custodian. WI Humane Society Ozaukee Campus

SAUKVILLE ? Officials from the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus have announced the shelter has been awarded LEED? Gold certification, as established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute. LEED is the nation?s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The Saukville facility opened in March 2011.

?Our goal was to create a highly energy efficient, more environmentally responsible facility that reduces long-term energy and water use costs for the organization. As leaders of our community who advocate for treating animals with respect and kindness, it is also integral to our mission to be good stewards of our environment,? WHS Ozaukee Campus Director Beth Maresh said.?

LEED certification of the WHS Ozaukee Campus was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include:

  • Solar hot water panels on the roof to heat water for bathing dogs and puppies

  • Strategies implemented to manage stormwater runoff, as well as use of native plants to eliminate need for site irrigation
  • Low-emitting paints, coatings, adhesives and sealants were used throughout the interior of the building

Oldest mites in amber discovered

230-million-year-old fossils push back date of resin-preserved arthropods

Web edition : Monday, August 27th, 2012

Mites could give competitors on Survivor a run for their game-show money.

Two of the tiny creatures, trapped in fossilized tree resin, smash the record for ancient amber-preserved arthropods, a group of critters that includes beetles, butterflies, spiders and shrimp. At 230 million years old, the mite fossils are about 100 million years older than previous finds, and suggest that mites? basic body blueprint may be built to outwit, outplay and outlast.

?Dinosaurs have come and gone, but mites have hardly changed,? says David Grimaldi of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. ?Their body form is quite similar to what we see in gall mites today.?

That similarity is somewhat surprising considering that the Earth was profoundly different 230 million years ago, when most plants were ferns, the Atlantic Ocean didn?t exist and pterosaurs cruised the skies. The Triassic-period mites, however, look just like their present-day relatives: They have segmented bodies, piercing mouthparts and legs bristling with ?featherclaws,? Grimaldi and his colleagues report online August 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ?

Mites seem to have made major adaptations, however, to their food supply. Unlike modern gall mites, which feast mostly on flowering plants (sometimes forming bumpy growths on the leaves), the Triassic ones chowed on a more primitive type of greenery: conifers. Grimaldi?s team discovered the two new species of mites, one Triasacarus fedelei and the other Ampezzoa triassica, smothered in droplets of amber from a now-extinct species of cone-bearing tree. The amber also held the remnants of a fly.?

The golden globules are about the size of a grain of rice. The creatures are visible only through a microscope as tiny flecks that mar the fossilized resin?s clarity. ?You can see these little critters in all their lifelike glory ? it?s really quite amazing,? says paleoentomologist Michael Engel of the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Limestone and shale can also hold arthropod fossils, but amber allows researchers to take a more intimate look. ?The detail preservation in these mites is leaps better than other Triassic arthropods,? Engel says. ?Actually, leaps is an understatement. The difference in preservation is a massive chasm.?

The team picked through ancient sediments in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy in search of resin dollops, then took two years to examine 70,000 amber droplets, shards and fragments. Only three housed arthropods. ?With this discovery, we?re obviously all hot and ready to go back and screen through lots more,? Grimaldi says.

Arthropods are the most diverse group of creatures on Earth, making up more than 50 percent of all known species. They?re one of the key lineages of life, says Engel. ?Anything we can do to better understand what led to their successes and failures can tell us how they shaped the planet in the past and how they?re shaping the planet today,? he says.

Working moms spend less time daily on kids' diet, exercise

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? When it comes to cooking, grocery shopping and playing with children, American moms with full-time jobs spend roughly three-and-half fewer hours per day on these and other chores related to their children's diet and exercise compared to stay-at-home and unemployed mothers, reports a new paper by a Cornell University health economist.

Male partners do little to make up the deficit: Employed fathers devote just 13 minutes daily to such activities and non-working fathers contribute 41 minutes, finds the study, which will be printed in the December issue of Economics and Human Biology.

The findings are consistent across socio-economic lines measured by the mothers' education, family income, race and ethnicity.

To make up for this time deficit, working mothers are significantly more likely to spend time purchasing prepared foods -- takeout from restaurants or prepackaged, ready-to-eat meals from grocery stores -- which are generally less nutritious than home-cooked meals.

"It's inaccurate to pin rising childhood obesity rates on women, given that husbands pick up so little of the slack," cautioned lead author John Cawley, professor of policy analysis and management and of economics at Cornell's College of Human Ecology.

The study does not prove that employment alone drives the way mothers spends their time. "For example, mothers who choose to work might be those who enjoy cooking less and who would cook less whether working or not," Cawley said.

He added that working mothers produce additional benefits for children such as more money to provide for family needs.

"It's important to remember that we can take steps to enhance childhood nutrition and physical activity without advocating that women exit the workforce," Cawley said. For instance, the authors argue, parents should be better educated about the nutritional content of restaurant and prepackaged foods. "In order to make more informed decisions, consumers need to have nutrition and calorie information available where they buy their food," said Cawley, who noted that federal health care reform rules will soon require chain and fast-food restaurants nationwide to post calorie counts of the foods they sell.

Cawley noted that schools shoulder a greater burden for supporting healthy lifestyles.

"Our findings underscore the importance of schools offering high-quality foods and physical education classes," he said. "In general, the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are urging comprehensive changes in school environments to promote healthy eating and active living."

The research was funded by the Cornell University College of Human Ecology's Institute for Health Economics, Health Behaviors and Disparities and by the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

For Paralympian Donovan Tildesley, 'vision' means seizing day ...

Gary Kingston

As a blind person, Donovan Tildesley utilizes a talking computer, which features a digitalized voice reading off the screen.

?To someone sighted who hears it for the first time, it sounds rather ridiculous,? says the Paralympic swimmer/golfer/skier/insurance broker/motivational speaker and, most recently, standup comic. ?So one of my jokes has to do with ?How does a blind person look at porn?? And then I imitate this voice reading a [porn] story off the screen.

?It?s a little offensive,? he adds with a laugh. ?It?s like ?Who the hell would go there?? ? Well, as you are about to find out, there are very few places Tildes-ley, a 28-year-old adventurer and ladies? man and a guy with limit-less vision, won?t go.

Double black diamond ski runs. Parachuting out of a plane. A planned hike of Kilimanjaro. Or, a joke about a female insurance agent getting a boob job.

?I work in an office with a bunch of women and I answer the phone a lot of times. We?ll get calls from clients ?Oh, I was speaking to the girl, uh, the smallish, red-headed girl.? ?And I tell them I?ll have to ask around the office. ?I kept asking and no such person worked there.? But then I found out later in the day that my colleague dyed her hair and got breast implants that weekend.?

Now, his act isn?t all blue humour suitable for college campuses and HBO. There is some family-friendly fare. Like the joke about him being a pretty bad kid.

?My parents had to come up with alternate ways of disciplining me,? says Tildesley, who has been blind since birth as a result of being born with-out retinas. ?They couldn?t exactly take away my Nintendo because I didn?t play the damn thing. And I couldn?t watch TV. So, whenever I stepped out of line or did something foolish, they?d go and move the furniture on me.?

Ba-da-boom.

Tildesley, a five-time Paralym-pic medallist in the pool, is about to compete in his fourth Games starting Thursday in London. But for a young man once defined by how fast he could swim without benefit of sight, so much has changed in the four years since he was Canada?s flagbearer during the opening ceremonies at Beijing.

He got a job at Buntain Insurance, went skydiving for his 25th birthday, took up golf, spent seven months in 2011 at the Colorado Centre for the Blind learning independent living and tried his hand at cracking wise on a stage.

All of which means that earning a medal this time around, at what he says will be his last Paralympics, might be tough. He?s not sad about it. It?s just that priorities change. You get older. New challenges await.

?I can?t be an athlete for the rest of my life.?

He was an inspirational, vocal leader in Beijing, extremely honoured that his teammates felt him worthy of being the flagbearer.

?It?s not going to be the same high,? he says of London. ?I?m going to be in a different mind space. Four years ago, swimming was very much my life. I?m not saying it isn?t any more, but I?m at the point in my life right now where I know that winning a medal is no guarantee.

?This Games is icing on the cake. If I can get up on that podium, I?d be ecstatic, but if I can somehow motivate other athletes on my team, other younger swimmers, get them excited to perform to their personal bests, then I will have done some of my job over there.

?The other thing is I?m in the insurance industry now. How can I tie this success in the pool to growing my own book of business? How can being a Paralympian help me to become a better salesman for myself and my company? What can I do with social media to increase that? So I?m looking at it from the holistic experience.?

NEEDS OWN APARTMENT

A preppy looking Tildesley ? a collared shirt, dress shorts and loafers ? is seated at the outdoor patio of a restaurant on Broadway, having just finished lunch with a female colleague from another Buntain office, when we sit down to talk.

He and Christina Cavaco, who is off to a new job in Calgary soon, have known each for three years, but become really good friends in the last few months through extended conversations about their shared passion for sales, people and personal growth.

Cavaco is half-Italian, half-Portuguese and incredibly attractive. And you can?t help but think that it?s a shame that Donovan can?t see this woman. But in a sense he can, just in his own way.

?It seems so funny when he talks about me,? Cavaco says in an interview days later when asked if she believes Donovan appreciates her beauty. ?It makes me feel a little weird, makes me go red. I say ?You can?t see me,? but he says ?I can hear it in the way you talk.?

?With women, he?s not shy at all. He?s obviously blind, but he?ll go up to any lady and start talking to her. He says he can tell by her voice and the smell of her scent if she?s attractive.

?He?s such a great guy to hang out with, just amazing.?

Tildesley, who still lives with his parents in Point Grey, says his only difficulty with women is that he doesn?t have a home of his own for them to take him back to.

He?s looking for a place, but needs one that is close to work and the Arbutus Club pool.

?I have a good feeling that after this Games, this will be the year it happens. Plus, it makes me more marketable to the opposite sex. A guy who lives at home? It?s harder to find dates.?

To prepare for his independence, he spent those seven months at the school in Colorado, although it wasn?t quite what he had expected.

?I went down there expecting to meet blind go-getters who wanted to start their own businesses and wanted to make tons of money. But I met people who had lost their sight later in life who didn?t know what to do, kids who were just out of high school trying to figure their way in life, people with other learning disabilities. I remember getting there the first day and half the people didn?t even know what the Paralympics were. So, it was a rather humbling experience.?

He did learn how to cook ? the final task was cooking a meal for 60 people ? and fell in love with Colorado and its spectacular outdoors. He climbed a 4,200-metre mountain with Eric Weihenmayer, the first blind person to reach the summit of Everest in 2001 and a man who starred last year in the ABC reality show Expedition Impossible.

?Honestly, if I didn?t have a job to come to back here and a Paralympics to train for, I would have stayed in Colorado. While the school wasn?t quite what I expected, I got the life experience and it instilled in me this new confidence and this greater appreciation for the world around me and helped me to feel more comfortable in my new skin.?

On his return, he joined friend Amber Weland ? ?one of the most naturally funny people I know,? he says ? at a comedy show at the Fray on Fraser last December. ?We kind of turned to each other and said these guys suck and she says ?you and me in 2012, we?re going to put on some shows.? ? Weland and Tildesley, by the way, met a few years back at a Board of Trade function when she offered him her elbow as he was getting out of a taxi.

?We became fast friends from there,? says Weland. ?That day, he ended up sort of trash-talking me into doing a day of skiing with him up at Whistler. I?m a pretty good snowboarder and he often leaves me behind. I tell him he makes a great ski buddy. With him, I can get up in the morning and not have to do my hair or put on mascara. As long as I put on deodorant, I?m okay.?

One night last February, Tildesley beat out a dozen other budding comics at the Fray ? ?I guess I had a lot of friends out that night who drank a lot of drinks? ? winning $100 and a chance to perform in the finals at the Edgewater Casino. He didn?t win and has been a bit too busy recently to get back on stage, but hopes to find some time after the Paralympics. ?I?m constantly trying to think of new material that?s not too offensive.?

Tildesley, who has a BA in English literature from UBC, was set to take a job with RBC in the Visa call centre after Beijing when his family?s neighbour, Gordon Buntain, suggested he come work for him and help develop his company?s travel medical insurance.

It hasn?t been easy ? finding adapt-able software, dealing with potential roadblocks put up by regulatory agencies. But the blunt-spoken, high-energy Buntain has backed Tildesley at every step.

?I told him ?you can do anything you wish, but let?s dream big,? ? said Bun-tain. ?Yes, there?s going to be hurdles, but I?ll support you.?

Tildesley says it has been challenging. ?But over time, I?ve figured out that I have a passion for sales. I absolutely love people and building relationships, getting to know them and helping to solve their problems.?

?IN THE BEST SHAPE POSSIBLE?

Tildesley took up golf a few years ago. He hasn?t played as much as he?d like, but this spring, Buntain sponsored a hole at a fundraising tournament for Donovan?s old school, St. George?s.

?Basically, it was a longest drive com-petition,? says Tildesley. ?I would get up and hit a shot and people would try to hit their ball past mine. It was called Beat the Blind Guy.?

Utilizing a sighted guide, Tildes-ley loves ripping down the slopes at Whistler, but says he has no interest in becoming a Winter Paralympian.

?Gates scare the hell out of me. Ski-ing?s like my therapy. I like to go up to the alpine and cut down the steepest and the deepest. I?d be worried that taking it on as a serious sport would take the fun out of it for me and I need that in my life.?

But in the next breath, he says with a big smile, ?You know what I think would be a good sport? Blind ski cross. Imagine a bunch of blind guys going through a gate and all trying to stay on course and not run into each other.?

In London, Tildesley, who competes in the S11 class with other totally blind swimmers, will race the 100-metre butterfly, the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

He owns freestyle world records at 800 and 1,500 metres, but those distances aren?t contested at the Paralympics. In Beijing, he earned bronze at 400 metres and was fourth in the 100. He was also fifth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 100 butterfly.

Spaniard Mohamed Enhamed won four gold in Beijing, two in world record time. He is back, as are key competitors from Ukraine, China and Argentina. There is also a strong new-comer from the U.S. in Brad Snyder, who was blinded last September while serving in Afghanistan and who had captained the Naval Academy swim team in his senior year.

?I think I?m in the best shape possible,? says Tildesley. ?Am I as spry as I was four years ago, eight years ago? Maybe not. But I?ve done the work. I?ve put in the metres. I?ve just got to decide in my own head that I can stand up and race as fast as I can and get myself on the podium.?

He says he?ll probably swim for one more year after the Paralympics, go to one more world championships. Then, he?d like to give back to the sport by serving on some athlete councils.

?I think a lot can be done for advocacy in the sport. I wish there was a way to get more blind people involved in sport because it?s really done so much for my life. It?s not only physically and mentally beneficial, but it?s opened so many doors.

?I wouldn?t be the person I am today, have the friends I do today without my involvement in sport and the confidence it?s instilled in me.?

Kimberly Seltzer: How To Attract Women After Divorce

Dating after divorce can seem overwhelming. It may have been a decade or more since you've been "out there," and you may feel confused or downright clueless about how to get your game back to attract new women into your world. Though you may feel nervous at first, you may find that it is even easier than before because you are now older, wiser and closer to knowing what you want. You just need a few tools to use to attract that perfect woman.

Overall, the secret to attracting anyone in your life is feeling good about yourself and projecting it outward. Here are answers to some commonly asked dating questions:

What should I wear on a date?
If a man is wearing something he feels good in, he is going to come across as a confident, successful alpha man, which is what women like. Wear clothes that are:

? Updated, stylish, comfortable and that fit your body well
? Those you wish you could wear every day
? Age and occasion appropriate
? Really express your personality
? Clean, well pressed and in good condition
? Colors that flatter your skin tone
? Polished, updated shoes
? Quality fabrics that don't cling, pucker or pull

You may want to find a stylist or a savvy female friend to help guide you.

What about hygiene?
Grooming is extremely important, as women really pay attention to this. Your ex-wife might have forgiven the over-grown and unruly hairs but it is not so appealing to a new prospective mate. Make sure your facial hair is neatly groomed, your hair is styled, your nails are short and your skin looks nice. It helps if you smell nice too. Don't pour the bottle of cologne on or you'll suffocate her. Instead, you should smell fresh and clean with maybe a dab of tasteful cologne. Women like men who take care of themselves.

How should I approach women?
Most men feel uncomfortable when first approaching an attractive woman. This usually stems from being nervous about saying the wrong thing and fear of rejection. Get out of your head. Just be in the moment and talk with her. Don't just talk about yourself. Ask questions about her life. One common mistake is trying too hard and being very serious when talking with women. It can almost feel more like an interview with memorized canned questions rather than an easy conversation. Be more playful and mix it up a bit to enjoy the new you and you'll see how easy it is to create attraction. Most women love when you give them attention, especially if you say things in an authentic way. The truth of the matter is that your "dating muscle" is atrophied after not using it for a while, so you have to exercise it and get it back in action. One way to do this is to get comfortable approaching everyone when you are out and about. Approach at least three people (both men and women) a day during your daily routine. Give compliments to people you meet. Women love when you notice something about them. After doing several approaches a day, it will get a lot easier and feel more natural.

How can I build a new social circle?
It is true that you did a lot of "married" activities with your ex-wife as a couple. Often your friends change as you step into the single world. Not only do you do things solo, but different activities may interest you now. The most important thing is to find other single friends you can do things with. It will open up your world and create new possibilities for meeting women. Explore several avenues by getting involved in networking groups, single events, outdoor group gatherings, regular trips to the gym and more. If you are having a difficult time knowing what to get involved in, think about three skills or hobbies you have or want to learn more about and research groups that relate to them. Discover what makes you tick and you'll build your social circle with other like-minded singles.

How can I overcome the divorce stigma?
Men often think they are painted with a scarlet letter once they are divorced. Actually, many women say that they prefer a divorced man because they like the fact that he has been in a long term relationship before and knows how to share with a partner. Marriage teaches you how to compromise, how to be more giving and how to understand women's needs. Just because you are divorced doesn't mean you have some sort of disease. Remember, over 50 percent of the population is in the same boat, so you are not alone. Instead, own who you are and enjoy your newfound freedom. This is your time to start over, enjoy yourself and have fun.

Although starting over can be intimidating and a little scary, it can actually be freeing and exciting as you embark upon a new adventure. This is your chance to explore the world and meet various women. By doing this, you'll discover who you are separate from the woman you were with for many years and find out what you would like and need in a future relationship. Remember, the dating road is not a dead end; it's an avenue to an exhilarating new journey.

Smart meter movement stirs rowdy debate in Texas

DALLAS (AP) ? Thelma Taormina keeps a pistol at her Houston-area home to protect against intruders. But one of the last times she used it, she said, was to run off a persistent utility company worker who was trying to replace her old electricity meter with a new digital unit.

"This is Texas." she declared at a recent public hearing on the new meters. "We have rights to choose what appliances we want in our home."

A nationwide effort to upgrade local power systems with modern equipment has run into growing resistance in Texas, where suspicion of government and fear of electronic snooping have made a humble household device the center of a politically charged showdown over personal liberty.

Some angry residents are building steel cages around their electric meters, threatening installers who show up with new ones and brandishing Texas flags at boisterous hearings about the utility conversion. At a recent hearing at the state Capitol in Austin, protesters insisted everyone present recite the Pledge of Allegiance before the meeting could begin.

"It's Gestapo. You can't do this," said Shar Wall of Houston, who attended the Public Utility Commission meeting wearing a large red "Texas Conservative" pin. "I'm a redneck Texas girl and I won't put up with it."

Utilities began replacing old-style electricity meters across the country about seven years ago as part of an effort to better manage demand on an increasingly strained power grid. New "smart meters" transmit and receive data remotely as electricity is used. Utility officials say they can use the real-time information to help prevent grid overloads during extreme temperatures. The devices would also promote conservation, such as cycling air conditioners on and off during peak demand periods.

In 2009, President Barack Obama devoted $3.5 billion in federal stimulus funds to help utility companies make the upgrade.

The conversion has triggered opposition in a number of states. Some residents have questioned the health impact of the radio waves the devices emit or the possibility that hackers could get confidential data from the transmissions.

Officials have downplayed the hazards, but several states, including California, Vermont, Maine and Nevada, have allowed residents to opt out of the new system. In most cases, residents would have to pay extra to have a utility employee come to their house to read their old meter.

Texas utilities have installed nearly 6 million smart meters, or 87 percent of their goal, since the state passed authorizing legislation in 2005. But as the project moves toward completion by 2016, the opposition is getting louder. It also carries the distinct flavor of an ultraconservative state that relishes its history as an independent republic before joining the United States.

State utility commission hearings on the meters have featured as many references to the Founding Fathers, the Revolutionary War and the Constitution as to the technical demands on the power system.

At a recent session, a staff presentation included a slide saying the new meters "are not meant to spy on you." Waiting to testify, activist David Akin replied, "Yes they are!"

Some say the meters would allow the police or other government agencies to tell when a person was awake and what they were doing in violation of the Fourth Amendment.

"I'm not going to let somebody else control what I do in my house," said Ginger Russell, who recently replaced her "No Smart Meters" sign with a steel cage around her home's analog meter in the East Texas town of Magnolia.

Those emphasizing privacy concerns cite a report issued by the U.S. Department of Energy in January that said many companies had not done enough to protect the smart meters from hackers. Some studies have also added to the health concerns. A branch of the World Health Organization last year called radio-frequency radiation from cellphones, utility meters and other devices a "possible carcinogen."

However, the Federal Communications Commission has rated the smart meters as safe, saying they are considered unlikely to cause bodily tissue heating or electric shock. The radio frequency radiation levels are much lower than those emitted by cellphones, supporters say.

Utility commission officials say the security concerns are being addressed and that the overwhelming majority of Texans accept the new meters. The commission will consider this fall whether to allow Texas residents to opt out.

"We believe this new technology is a direction that benefits consumers from an energy efficiency standpoint," said Leticia Lowe, spokeswoman for CenterPoint Energy, which serves the Houston area. She added, "We're moving forward with an industry that hadn't changed in over 100 years."

In the meantime, CenterPoint has directed its employees to leave immediately when a resident rejects a smart meter. The company says contract installers are encountering tough resistance in some neighborhoods.

"We're concerned about the safety of utility workers and other public service personnel legitimately doing their jobs," said CenterPoint spokesman Floyd LeBlanc.

Taormina, 55, says she's keeping her pistol handy just in case. The first smart meter installer who came to her house last summer wouldn't leave until she got the weapon out, she said.

"If someone comes on my property and assaults me ? that's the idea of having a weapon is to equalize my little self against somebody that's bigger than me," she said.

This is why I don?t trust women

A number of Japanese men were recently asked by goo Ranking to describe moments when they think they cannot trust women. If a similar question gets asked to Japanese women, I?ll be sure to report, of course.

Demographics

From the 6th to the 9th of July 2012 1,016 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 60.0% of the sample were female, 9.9% in their teens, 12.7% in their twenties, 29.0% in their thirties, 27.0% in their forties, 11.0% in their fifties, and 10.3% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. This survey was for the men only.

I find this a difficult survey to understand, as the theme doesn?t seem too consistent, and some of the answers are more like jealousy issues than trust issues, I think.

Ranking result

Q: What moments make you think ?And that?s why I cannot trust women?? (Sample size=406, male)

Rank ? Score
1 After she bends my ear about her friends, when I see her chatting to them as close friends 100
2 After we spilt up, when I learn that she soon started going out with another guy 71.5
3 When I see her being too influenced by people and her way of thinking changing like the wind 65.3
4 When she says ?I?m fine with whatever? but then goes in the huff about what I propose 58.3

History of the Screenwriters' Workshop: 1987-2012 : Screenwriters ...

In 1987, screenwriters Brent Johnson and Susan Weisman developed the original idea for Screenwriters? Workshop. After working on a screenplay production project with local film professionals with the purpose of getting more film experience, Brent and Susan decided to establish a permanent organization that could continue to offer screenwriters similar collaborative experiences along with a variety of other learning opportunities. This was with the purpose of making the screenwriter and their script the focus of the creative process. Over the past twenty-five years, this vision has been pursued through the efforts of many individuals and the various programs of SWW.
The Screen Labs program produced shorts films from member scripts using the creative and production resources in the Twin Cities. Robb Mitchell served as ScreenLabs producer for several years and he and previous producers were able to bring the directors, actors and various film production personnel from the Twin Cities together to create some wonderful work. The current Script2Screen program carries on this production tradition using a three month long theme-based short screenplay contest to choose a winning script, which is then filmed.

Script readings have been a constant throughout SWW?s history. The current Script Night Reading Series, which has been held at the Jungle Theater the past two years, showcases member scripts. These readings have a director and professional actors. The 2nd Tuesday Reading Group, facilitated by Karen Frank, is a more informal script reading utilizing SWW members and MCTC students as actors in a table read format.

For many years, the Barry Morrow Fellowship was a feature-length contest, which gave the winner a meeting with Rainman writer, Barry Morrow. A feature-length script contest emerged again in 2011 with sponsorship from Thomson-Reuters, and will continue for the second year in 2012. Along with a cash prize, the 2011 contest winner, Larry Matthews, received a Script Night staged reading and a meeting with producer Judith James of Dreyfus-James Productions.

In the early days, ScreenLine was the newsletter that kept members updated on member news, writing tips and Minnesota film news. John Jansen was a long-time editor. Now the SWW website and e-mail are the sources of information for members.

SWW has had many well-known screenwriters and writing instructors speak to its membership over the years, such as local writers Jeffrey Hatcher and Judith Guest, as well as nationally known writers such as Barry Morrow, David Trottier, and Stephen McFeely.

And finally, SWW has fostered screenwriting groups. Three weekly Script Groups provide a forum for writers and fellow members to read script pages aloud and receive feedback. While there were private member groups in the early days and still are, SWW now sponsors three ongoing script groups which meet weekly throughout the year and are open to any member of any level.

SWW has had peaks and valleys throughout the years, but it continues to aid Minnesota screenwriters in improving their craft and creative development. The Screenwriters? Workshop has always been run by a small group of dedicated people and we are grateful to all of our current leaders as well as former leaders and founders. We also greatly appreciate the continued involvement and support of our members, without whom this organization would not exist. We would like to thank our current board members for their service ? Hafed Bouassida, Ed Leschke, Perry Lueders, and Trina Koning. We also express our gratitude to former board members for their service ? some of which include Robb Mitchell, Christopher Gegax, Chris Velasco, James McConnell, Brett Johnson, Julie Rappaport, and Cheryl Conway (apologies for an incomplete list). We hope to continue for many more years with the support of our members and the wider community.

Burma_Myanmar Government attack and take over KIA?s PanWar camp by military strategy

kachin_08ee321KIA spoke person Salankabar La Nan said, government forces attacked us seriously to take over one of our camp which Kachin Indepence Army (KIA) Brigade (1) at PanWar area, Chi Phway Township in the Northeastern part of Kachin State near China-Myanmar border Tan Chun at boundary post No (6) on 20? August morning.

?The fight has been seriously about 2 hours. 2 dead bodies left from government sides. They came and attacked us with 2 battalions. They were attacking PanWar area with over 400 forces. They could not break and withdraw their forces. It seemed as the government sides had suffered and killed more. The battalions which attacked us were Kha-La- Ya (77) and Kha-La-Ya (47)? said La Nan KIA spoke person.

Since August 15, government troops attacked PanWar area near border boundary post 6 and 7 then on 20 August; they try to take over this camp which is KIA Brigade (1).

This time is the first time of the government?s confiscating camp. In this area, we have about 500 refugees and also free battle zone that KIA nominated with U Aung Min at freely discussion on 20 July.

In the earlier, Pan War area was Burma Communist Party (Ba Ka Pa) No. (202)?s area. After that, a group led by U Sakontheinyinn surrendered under government and changed to government?s frontier force. U Sakontheinyinn also became as legislative representative. This area was KIA movement field since before Ba Ka Pa?s area.

Since in July, KIA suggested to government where a place we should meet and discuss as secondary country as a standard of non-worried and safely like at Shweli in China for ceasefire discussion. However, government want to meet at Muse in Shan State since before and until today they will only accept the discussion at that place.

Some refugees Committee?s members said, even Kachin refugees from Pan War running and evading, some of Kachin refugees from Shweli border transferred to Myanmar government?s control refugee camps after China government negotiated with Myanmar government.

Additionally, some of Kachin News Media which support the government wrote that KIA was testing heavy weapon which can fire 200 miles. Concerned for this case, U Lar Nan said ?We are fighting with our mind strength which has stronger than weapons and we are fighting with what weapons have in our hands. If we really have far miles as heavy weapon, the battle?s situation will change?

Some battle observers said, the reason for creating and spreading news about KIA was using heavy weapons that when government use that kind of weapons, to hide the true and to able to use what weapons they want to.

Therefore, if we consider Pan War military operation and attacking is when government attacked KIA, according to diplomacy they follow China government wells and accepted refugees to attract China, according to military strategy that they are attacking and confiscating, according to media method spreading news that KIA using heavy weapons said some observers.
